California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Monday that the recall effort against him "threatens our values" after the petition garnered enough signatures to trigger a recall election in the state.
"This Republican recall threatens our values and seeks to undo the important progress we've made -- from fighting COVID, to helping struggling families, protecting our environment, and passing commonsense gun violence solutions," Newsom wrote in a tweet. "There's too much at stake."
Newsom's tweet also included a video criticizing the recall effort and those who created it.
"Who's behind the partisan recall of Governor Gavin Newsom? Anti-vaccine and QAnon extremists, violent white supremacists like the Proud Boys who attacked out nation's Capitol on January 6," a narrator of the video says. "And the same right-wing Republican politicians who supported Donald Trump's attempt to overturn the election."

(17,382 posts)Thanks to the loophole in CA law, rich people can now pay to gather signatures to force an expensive, low turnout recall election in California. Gavin Newsome is not the first and he will not be the last so long as this loophole exists that allows a small well funded minority to force a low turnout recall election.

The recall also received $100,000 from billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, a major donor to Democratic politicians and causes. The former Facebook executive has said on Twitter that he wants to run against Newsom but has not made moves to launch a campaign.
Attempts to reach Palmer, the Leones, the Groffs and Palihapitiya were unsuccessful.
The fundraising figures reflect all financial activity through the end of 2020 as well as large donations disclosed during January to the California Secretary of States office, with likely duplicates and transfers between committees excluded. These numbers do not include donations of less than $5,000 since Jan. 1, which will be reported later this year.
