During an intense CNN interview on Tuesday night, DC Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone recounted the horrific violence he experienced at the hands of Capitol insurrectionists on Jan. 6. Fanone, who suffered a heart attack after he was beaten and tased by rioters, expressed disappointment that Trump supporters have tried to memory hole the events of that day.

“It’s been very difficult seeing elected officials and other individuals kind of whitewash the events of that day or downplay what happened,” Fanone told CNN anchor Don Lemon. Asked to react to conservatives who have painted the rioters as peaceful protesters, Fanone said that rhetoric was “dangerous,” adding that he “experienced a group of individuals that were trying to kill me to accomplish their goal.”

Fanone found himself needing to pause and collect himself throughout the lengthy interview, apologizing for getting emotional. “I experienced the most brutal, savage hand-to-hand combat of my entire life, let alone my policing career, which spans almost two decades,” he starkly noted.

11. The DOJ also made a decision not to investigate anyone not in the Capitol attack on January 6.

Here’s the info from an article in the NYT. DOJ officials refused the plan. This was in late February so Garland was not yet in place. Their main objection was that “the plan appeared to suggest investigating people without any evidence that they had committed crimes.” This was not a spontaneous attack on January 6. It was planned and funded by others, and now those others will not be investigated unless Garland changes this. That is not accountability or justice—it is excusing people who used the attackers as pawns in their game to overturn the election.

“In the weeks after the deadly Capitol riot on Jan. 6, federal prosecutors in Washington devised a broad plan to root out possible conspirators, according to two people briefed on it: pull together the names of an array of people who may have known the assailants, and investigate them for ties to the attack.

Those lists, the prosecutors proposed, could include organizers of the rally where President Donald J. Trump spoke just before the assault, anyone who helped pay for rioters to travel to Washington and any member of the far-right extremist groups that were represented in the crowd that day.

Two of the prosecutors — trial lawyers leading the riot inquiry — presented the plan to the F.B.I. in late February, along with a document of about 25 pages that laid out the strategy with an eye toward uncovering possible conspiracies between the attackers and others, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an active investigation.”

14. The Capitol attack was a huge announcement of just how far they were and are willing to go.

There is nothing too extreme to fit into their views, and nothing too extreme to actualize them. That that is a massive danger to a democracy couldn't be more obvious...and now there is a large and concerted effort to soften and normalize absolutely appalling viewpoints and behaviour.

This is much worse than I had thought just a couple of short years ago, and the snowball is picking up speed and mass as it goes downhill. I'd hate to even predict the bottom of that hill.
