She saw the delivery driver speed by one Sunday evening.
The 35-year-old Berkeley woman, whose identity was not released by local police, told officers on April 18 that she thought a Black delivery driver for a postal company was driving too fast in the neighborhood.
She and her boyfriend, who was also unidentified, then trailed the deliveryman in their own vehicle. That led the couple to the 1700 block of Delaware St. right by McGee Street, a fairly residential stretch of downtown Berkeley.
After police arrived on the scene, the woman then told the cops of her attempts to confront the driver about his speeding. She used force, according to a statement from Berkeley police shared Tuesday, to prevent the driver from escaping the confrontation and used hateful language disparaging of people of color. While she called 911 as did other bystanders at the scene, a Berkeley police spokesman told SFGATE the victim of the altercation did not.
Shortly after, she was arrested by police on suspicion of battery, false imprisonment and hate crime charges, namely using offensive words and wilfully threatening a person based on their perceived characteristics.

(2,911 posts)Get the number off the vehicle, call the post office, report the driver as speeding (if they really were). How I would handle it, if so concerned.

(53,743 posts)The cops sound like true Berkeleyites. The woman and boyfriend don't belong there (my old stomping grounds back in the day).

(969 posts)A lot of fleet vehicles (large corporations and governmental entities, for example) are equipped with GPS monitoring devices that will send a message to Management if a vehicle exceeds the speed limit, or 'goes out of route'. The drivers are well aware of this and act accordingly. So they are pretty careful about their speed and adhering to their 'route'.
Another new technology is a dash camera that watches the road and the driver. Remember the 'Amazon drivers pooping in bags' stories from a couple weeks ago? A "Big Brother" box, if you will.
Karen may just have self-owned massively, if there are any of these involved.
Someone here has a meme in their sig line about "Karma Sutra: When fate f$^&s you over in all sorts of creative ways."
Some days things just happen right.

(11,726 posts)My wife while in school for her doctoral program, rode with BPD as a mental health crisis worker. She said that they were well trained to help people experiencing psychiatric emergencies (not escalating, but allowing the MH worker to do their job) and they were often harassed and filmed to "catch them in the act" and would often engage with the filmmaker to put them at ease while they did their job. She was with them for about a year and really appreciated the experience. My brother in law, a police officer said that his former department modeled their community mental health response after Berkeley's with their input.

(9,041 posts)People get fooled by its reputation for very liberal politics.
First, it's hilariously segregated. You go north of University Ave (which this place was), and you've got your very affluent, very white, very entitled folks in expensive homes tooling around in their SUVs (the environment is for peons who can't afford things) with their children who are the most precious things in all human history - and they will let you know if they think you've even had a crossing thought otherwise.
They'll say they're super liberal and woke, but then try to do anything that could potentially - ever - affect their property values.
I worked in Berkeley for about ten years. Man, there are a lot of unpleasant entitled people there. This story surprises me not at all. She was probably wondering what a black person was doing north of the high school.
Tis a silly place. But now a very affluent place, with all the assholery that goes with that.
