Trump's Ukraine scandal is a Fox News story
Fox helped get Trump into this mess, and it's the key to getting him out of it

Fox supercharged Giulianis disinformation campaign
Giuliani, with the presidents approval, developed a shadow foreign policy campaign in Ukraine, working with corrupt officials to dig up dirt on Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, undermine the U.S. intelligence communitys conclusion that Russia had interfered in the 2016 presidential election, and remove U.S. and Ukrainian players that posed obstacles to that effort. That disinformation campaign played out on Fox.
Giuliani filtered the results of his investigation through John Solomon, a conservative writer with a long record of serving as a mouthpiece for right-wing opposition research. Solomon would write up aspects of Giulianis work in columns for The Hill, then go on Fox, where his scoops were woven into the networks conspiracy theories. Over a six-month period, Solomon appeared on Fox News or Fox Business at least 72 times; 51 of those appearances were on Hannitys program. (Solomons role as a Giuliani henchman led to him landing a contract as a Fox contributor last month.) As Foxs feverish coverage of the Bidens crescendoed, Trump and Giuliani both appeared on the network to bolster the smears.
Depositions from witnesses before the impeachment inquiry reveal that top administration figures at the White House and State Department were forced to monitor Fox for clues about the shape of U.S. foreign policy toward Ukraine. George Kent, a State Department official with oversight over the country, reported tracking extensive coverage from Hannity and Fox host Laura Ingraham. Fiona Hill, a former National Security Council official, testified that she and then-national security adviser John Bolton both regularly tuned in to Fox to keep abreast of Giulianis antics, adding that the networks coverage began to have an impact obviously on our work.
Notably, Kent and former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch each testified to an effort by the State Department to contact Hannity in order to thwart what Kent termed a campaign of slander against the ambassador. Yovanovitch had apparently become a thorn to Giulianis effort to conduct a shadow foreign policy, and so he promoted lies about her that made their way into Solomons columns and then onto Foxs airwaves.
Joseph diGenova, a frequent Fox guest who is Solomons lawyer, argued in March on Hannitys program that Yovanovitch needs to be called home to the United States for consultation in order to answer a slew of questions about her conduct and her assault on the president of the United States.
According to Kent, State Department counselor Ulrich Brechbuhl subsequently reached out and suggested to Mr. Hannity that if there was no proof of the allegations, that he should stop covering them. (Hannity has since denied that State contacted him about Yovanovitch.) In any case, Giulianis smear campaign apparently had its intended effect, as Yovanovitch was recalled from her post in May.

A Dozen Questions for John Solomon
by Sidney Blumenthal
November 5, 2019
EXCERPT...
Solomon began his career as a reporter for the Associated Press, but subsequently bounced around in right-wing media from the Washington Times to a website called Circa News (owned by Sinclair Media and now defunct). In 2012, the Columbia Journalism Review concluded that Solomon has a history of bending the truth to his story line and distorting facts and hyping petty stories. Among his claims to infamy is publishing the debunked Uranium One conspiracy.
Starting in March of this year, Solomons articles in The Hill and his tweets spun out a web of conspiracy theories, in some cases then tweeted by Trump: that parts of the Ukrainian government in coordination with the U.S. ambassador to the Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch colluded to help Hillary Clintons campaign by leaking financial records of Paul Manafort, Trumps campaign chairman (who had been a consultant to the Russian backed Ukrainian president deposed in the 2014 revolution Viktor Yanukovych); that the U.S. ambassador had pressured the Ukraine prosecutor not to investigate a George Soros-backed group and Soros-connected names who helped the Clinton campaign in the alleged scheme; and that the ambassador told the prosecutor not to investigate a list of individuals and that, according to the prosecutor, former Vice President Joe Biden was supposedly attempting to quash the prosecutors probe of his son Hunters involvement with Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company.
Solomon depicted a second innocent victim of these conspiracies in addition to Trump: Ukrainian oligarch Dimitry Firtash, a major target of the Soros group. Firtash close to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian mafia kingpin Semion Mogilevich, and a chief financier of former Ukrainian president Yanukovych is fighting extradition to avoid U.S. federal charges of bribery and racketeering. Solomon wrote that Robert Muellers investigation was attempting to frame Firtash to get some dirt on Donald Trump, but that the case against Firtash was falling apart. Solomon stated, The oligarchs defense team told me that Firtash rejected the deal because he didnt have credible information or evidence.
The State Department labeled the charges in Solomons initial article about Yovanovitch an outright fabrication. Later, the Ukrainian prosecutor Solomon quoted as his source, Yuri Lutsenko, was dismissed from his position and disavowed Solomons reporting, saying that Hunter Biden did not violate anything and now said that his statements to Solomon about a do-not-prosecute list were false. Lutsenko is now under criminal investigation for abuse of power. Meanwhile, the effort to extradite Firtash to face corruption charges continues.

When Dirty Russian-Connected Money Saved Trumps Ass and His Ensuing Business Disasters Helped Destroy the Global and American Economies
September 27, 2020
Brian E. Frydenborg
As Trumps taxes return to the news, here is the parallel context and setup where he went from failure on the verge of collapse to being propped up by money connected to Putins Russian government and the Russian mafia and then to failing repeatedly and spectacularly in those related business ventures, but in ways that allowed him to hide the dire straits of his finances and run as a successful billionaire for president in 2015-2016. And, oh, he managed to fail in these ventures in ways that helped to bring on the global financial crises and Americas Great Recession of 2008. As the house of cards image of Trump lied and cheated his way to building up comes tumbling down, a detailed look at that shady time when Trump was boosted by dirty Russian-connected money is essential.

Excerpt...
Russian banks, mainly the state-run Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Affairs (VEB) and Gazprombank, have over the years primarily financed the growth of Mr. Firtashs business empire in energy and chemicals.
Under former President Viktor Yanukovychs truncated presidency in 2010-2014, the former fireman and soldier received credit lines of up to $11 billion from bankers close to Russian President Vladmir Putin, a Reuters investigation found in November 2014.
Leading up to 2009, Mr. Firtash was at the dead center of the biggest alleged corruption operation in Ukraines history in which he raked in billions of dollars by jointly running an intermediary company with Russian state-owned Gazprom to supply natural gas to Ukraine.
Mr. Firtash has defended the business arrangement as saving consumers money because the imported Russian gas was sold at prices lower than what official Kyiv had negotiated, albeit on the surface and when Ukraine was largely Gazproms second-largest customer in Europe.
Leaked U.S. diplomatic cables featuring his meeting with Washingtons ambassador in Kyiv have him admitting to associating with criminals, including Russian mafia kingpin Semion Mogilevich, to establish businesses.

On 23 March 2011, Dmytro Firtash, wearing the ornate robe of a Cambridge University beneficiary, shook hands with Prince Philip. That moment marked the peak of his ascent in British society. The village boy who once loved pasturing cows had come a long way. Thanks to his PR team, he enjoyed the image of a businessman and patron of the arts in the UK.
As bagman for mobster Semion Mogilevich, Firtash directly links the Russian mafiya to the British Establishment. He was once described by a Chicago attorney general as upper-echelon associat[e] of Russian organised crime. Eight years after his royal handshake, Firtash is currently holed up in Vienna fighting extradition to the US but remains untouched by British law enforcement.
However, there is evidence that his London associates are linked to Cambridge Analytica and Trumps impeachment investigation.

He introduced Manafort to the eastern oligarchs who would prove Manaforts downfall and lobbied for his protégée to be added to Trumps campaign.
Finkelstein was also a strategist to Viktor Orban, the Hungarian President who had been befriended by Firtashs boss Semion Mogilevich in the 1990s. Mogilevich and the Russian mob he oversees routinely perform favours for Vladimir Putin and work closely with Russian intelligence. Hungary, under Orbans leadership, still purchases gas from Rosukrenergo, which is a joint creation of by Firtash and Mogilevich. The circle is complete.

Giulianis associate David Correia, who hired Donald Trumps lawyer as a consultant for his fraud-busting business, was sentenced on Monday to a year in prison after his venture turned out to be a fraud itself.
The Florida businessman pleaded guilty in October to duping investors in connection to £1.6m raised for the company Fraud Guarantee. The company was formulated to protect investors in businesses from becoming victims of fraud.
The start-up's ties with Mr Giuliani came under scrutiny after it paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars for consulting work while he also worked for Mr Trump as his lawyer and represented him during his first impeachment.

How Team Trump used Fox News as a laundromat for unverified Russian information about top Democrats
By Marshall Cohen, Oliver Darcy and Zachary Cohen
CNN, October 12, 2020
While most of the nation was largely fixated over the past week on President Donald Trump's coronavirus diagnosis, the President and his allies in right-wing media have been engrossed with something else entirely.
Trump, with the help of outlets like Fox News, has been pushing a dishonest narrative in touting intelligence documents that his administration declassified last month on the eve of the first presidential debate. They claimed the information was a supposed smoking gun proving that Hillary Clinton and the Obama administration sought to frame Trump with a Russian collusion scandal.
But when examined closely the documents indicate no such thing. In fact, by the Trump administration's own admission, they are based on unverified Russian intelligence that could be totally bogus. Which is to say that the President and Fox News personalities such as Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson are hyping and disseminating information that originates from a foreign adversary to bludgeon top Democratic officials.
Snip...
What makes this situation more alarming is that John Ratcliffe, Trump's Director of National Intelligence who declassified the documents, appears to be selectively doing so to help Trump accuse his 2020 opponent of committing a crime -- all with the help of a major US media organization.

REUTERS SPECIAL REPORT
Putin's allies channelled billions to Ukraine oligarch
By Stephen Grey, Tom Bergin, Sevgil Musaieva, Roman Anin
NOV. 26, 2014
Russian government records reviewed for this article reveal for the first time the terms of recent deals between Firtash and Russias Gazprom, a giant gas company majority owned by the state.
According to Russian customs documents detailing the trades, Gazprom sold more than 20 billion cubic metres of gas well below market prices to Firtash over the past four years - about four times more than the Russian government has publicly acknowledged. The price Firtash paid was so low, Reuters calculates, that companies he controlled made more than $3 billion on the arrangement.
Over the same time period, other documents show, bankers close to Putin granted Firtash credit lines of up to $11 billion. That credit helped Firtash, who backed pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovichs successful 2010 bid to become Ukraines president, to buy a dominant position in the countrys chemical and fertiliser industry and expand his influence.
The Firtash story is more than one mans grab for riches. It demonstrates how Putin uses Russian state assets to create streams of cash for political allies, and how he exported this model to Ukraine in an attempt to dominate his neighbour, which he sees as vital to Russias strategic interests. With the help of Firtash, Yanukovich won power and went on to rule Ukraine for four years. The relationship had great geopolitical value for Putin: Yanukovich ended up steering the nation of more than 44 million away from the Wests orbit and towards Moscows until he was overthrown in February.
Firtash has always been an intermediary, said Viktor Chumak, chairman of the anti-corruption committee in the previous Ukrainian parliament. He is a political person representing Russias interests in Ukraine.
Snipski...
Putins system of comrade capitalism has had huge costs for the ordinary people of Russia: By granting special cheap deals to Firtash, Gazprom missed out on about $2 billion in revenue it could have made by selling that gas at market prices, according to European gas price data collected by Reuters. Four industry analysts said that Gazprom could have sold the gas at substantially higher prices to other customers in Europe.

The oligarchs grouped around Putin have a vision shared by many Conservatives. During the Cold War, the West saw itself as exporting democracy to Russia. However, western societies were always, to some degree, oligarchies.
Russia is now exporting its values to the West, abetted by Western politicians and oligarchs. They admire Putins social model and suck up Russian funding. They aim to replace democracies with elitist fiefdoms.

Federal prosecutors have described this guy as belonging to a cadre of upper-echelon associates of Russian organized crime, and still Firtash is scrambling to put some distance between himself and the former presidents clown lawyer.
In 2019, Firtash told the New York Times that Giuliani approached him with a deal to get the Justice Department to drop the case against him in return for dirt on Joe Biden. Giuliani told him to fire Lanny Davis, his Democratically aligned attorney, and replace him with Victoria Toensing and her husband Joe diGenova, conservative media stars who worked with Giuliani to advance his bogus claims about the current president. Firtash did what he was told, and indeed Toensing did manage to secure facetime with then Attorney General Bill Barr to discuss Firtashs case.
But that was then, and this is now. As Talking Points Memo points out, Firtash has given Toensing, who also got a visit from the DOJs cellphone collection squad, the boot. Hes back with Davis, who put out a statement Friday with his colleague Dan Webb denying any involvement in the search for dirt on Joe Biden and his son.
