It's all very privileged-and-confused sort of like when Richard Dawkins says something sexist and then pretends to not know what the fuss was all about.

i dunno, tho, the antiquity of slavery is a thing. and the many forms of slavery is also a thing. and the part where it exists still.
but that doesnt mean that the enslavement of africans wasnt the worst of the worst. and worthy of particularly harsh condemnation and repercussions, even today.
it's not simple, and it's not even over.

(118,655 posts)Awful. All that caribbeaners were asking for after independance was that the West buy cane sugar to fund the local economies instead of getting sugar from sugar beets. We could not even do that in the West.

Yes, Boudicca and the Iceni waged furious war with the Romans, but the occupation was largely peaceful and welcomed by late Iron age Brits.
The Romans worked on a theory of 'Romanising' the Brit populace; by introducing their civic systems, engineering, trade achitecture etc. Most Brits saw the benefits of embracing the Roman culture.

(70,103 posts)i've been to india, and they do surprisingly well w/o them.
they also manage to have cars, trucks, tuk tuks, motorcycles w whole families on them, camels and oxen share the road.
if you dont know what a tuk tuk is, you should google it. it's a crazy thing. sort of a taxi/golf cart.
we saw one carrying 17 ppl, including the driver.
now google it.
they dont do it well. lots of ppl do get hurt and die. but we put a lot of miles on there, and never saw a near miss. or much of a traffic jam, rly.
nothing like driving the kennedy expressway. or lakeshore drive, ffs.
