US Catholic bishops may press Biden to stop taking Communion

"When U.S. Catholic bishops hold their next national meeting in June, they’ll be deciding whether to send a tougher-than-ever message to President Joe Biden and other Catholic politicians: Don’t receive Communion if you persist in public advocacy of abortion rights.

At issue is a document that will be prepared for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops by its Committee on Doctrine, with the aim of clarifying the church’s stance on an issue that has repeatedly vexed the bishops in recent decades. It’s taken on new urgency now, in the eyes of many bishops, because Biden — only the second Catholic president — is the first to hold that office while espousing clear-cut support for abortion rights.

Such a stance, by a public figure, is “a grave moral evil,” according to Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, who chairs the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities and believes it’s necessary to publicly rebuke Biden on the issue.

“Because President Biden is Catholic, it presents a unique problem for us,” Naumann told The Associated Press. “It can create confusion. ... How can he say he’s a devout Catholic and he’s doing these things that are contrary to the church’s teaching?”

The document, if approved, would make clear the USCCB’s view that Biden and other Catholic public figures with similar viewpoints should not present themselves for Communion, Naumann said.

In accordance with existing USCCB policy, it would still leave decisions on withholding Communion up to individual bishops. In Biden’s case, the top prelates of the jurisdictions where he frequently worships — Bishop W. Francis Malooly of Wilmington, Delaware, and Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington, D.C. — have made clear that Biden is welcome to receive Communion at churches they oversee.

The document-in-the-works results from a decision in November by the USCCB’s president, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, to form a working group to address the “complex and difficult situation” posed by Biden’s stances on abortion and other issues that differ from official church teaching. Before disbanding, the group proposed the drafting of a new document addressing the issue of Communion — a project assigned to the doctrine committee.

The committee has not released details about its work. Naumann said the matter will be discussed at the USCCB’s meeting in June and the bishops will vote on whether the committee should continue working on the document so it could be publicly released later.

A two-thirds majority would be needed for work to proceed, Naumann said. But even critics of the initiative, such as Bishop John Stowe of Lexington, Kentucky, predict the endeavor will win overwhelming approval.

......

Some Catholic academics are uneasy about the document.

“Are you really going to deny Communion for the president of the United States?” asked Margaret McGuinness, a religion professor at La Salle University in Philadelphia. “I don’t think this is going to shake his faith. ... I don’t see anything constructive coming out of it.”

She noted that a majority of U.S. Catholics, according to polls, say abortion should be legal in at least some cases.

Seriously. The USCCB, having had its ranks packed for decades by John Paul II and Benedict XVI, has become little more than a mouthpiece for the far right. I doubt most U.S. Roman Catholics give a rat's ass about what they think.

Catholic church has contributed to mass attendance going from 90% to 30% in less than 4 decades, here in Ireland. Moderates had enough and left, leaving the RWNJs in position of influence. Looks like it's happening in the US too.

This is the same group that protects pedophiles and hinders prosecutions over decades.

The same group that tried and sometimes succeeded in stealing land and assets from nunneries to pay the hush money for pedophiles.

Go ahead excommunicate Joe and Jill. I'd bet, they give substantially to the RCC. Maybe they'll move to be Episcopal, UCC, DOC (disciples of christ) , or some other group that doesn't preach hatred of LGBTQ while protecting serial child predators. I would be proud to have Joe and his family attend an open and affirming church.

How many kids committed suicide, turned to drugs, or otherwise ruined their lives because Catholic bishops always protected the pedophiles rather than the parishioners? Any other group would have been hut with child trafficking and rico charges.

Get your own house in order first bishops.

I was going to have to get a spoon to put them back in place. I thought that his die hard Catholic sister was going to quit breathing from laughing.

It is nice to know there are smart die hard Catholics out there.

I hope Joe can redraw and enforce the safety net again for separation of church and state.

The merging of church into government these last 4+ years has been particularly unnerving.

I’ve pretty much lost all respect for most of the Bishops because of the way they harass and try to humiliate officeholders who are Catholic and Democratic.

They leave the Republicans, whether Catholic or Evangelical, alone because the GOPers give lip service to banning all abortions — despite all the other sins and hypocrisies of GOPers. Something is really not right with this picture.

They can go fuck right off and stay the FUCK OUT of our fucking wombs.

Most forced birthers are deeply fucked up humans who have zero right telling anyone what the fuck to do.

A massive part of the US problem with this is that far too many allow these forced birthers to always stay on the front foot. Fucking push back HARD, break these fucking berks. Zero tolerance for tyranny.

I cannot see myself every coming back to live there, I just cannot. Far too many monsters running riot at most every level.

Some of the stories I read about DUers' personal l experiences with friends, co-workers, and family just make me seethe in rage and sadness.

I literally cannot understand why some of them, especially those who live in deep, dark, vast red shitholes, stay there, especially as most of their troubles seem (in their tellings of these anecdotes) to mainly come from the fact they live surrounded by monsters.

The rage and sadness I feel is not healthy for me mentally.

all of its assets worldwide and giving all proceeds to the poor and all buildings (churches, convents, the vatican) to the needy for housing.

After raping so many thousands of children, driving them to suicide, threatening children for telling, and not providing post trauma care, those asshole pedophiles in dresses need to STFU and disappear into history.

There used to be nuns and priests all over the city streets in their habits. Now I don’t see single one walking the streets anymore. I guess they got tired of being called out as pedophile enablers and getting spit upon. Religious trash.

I imagine it will be defeated, withdrawn, or vetoed by the Papal Nuncio. There is no way that the Pope wants to pick the biggest personal fight with the Head of State of a superpower since Henry VIII.

Is that a fight the Church wants to have?

Attacking a priest, backed by his Archbishop, serving communion to the President of the US.

Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
