(46,703 posts)It is a contradictory behavior that we need to find a better way to explain.
The problem is, that people like Tim Scott know that we're right, but repeat the Republican mantra because it's better for their pocket. And that requires special attention from us, but we have to find a better way to communicate, than resurrecting the Uncle Tom image.
I don't have an answer, but I do have a testimonial on how I won a huge concession from a black latino friend of mine who was viciously hard right. I steadily worked on him, using what I knew about him when we were growing up, to show what a poser he was. He repeated the usual right-wing holier-than-though bullshit, and I kept coming back with examples of when he was younger, when he lived in an opposite manner.
And, I really got him, when he tried to push aside the issues that are important to the woke culture, much like Tim Scott does. He posted a meme from a poster who was apparently black: "Liberals say black people should feel oppressed, and white people should feel guilty. I say, we all should feel proud to be Americans."
That was it for me. I reminded my friend that he lived abroad for many of the years he worked, where it was easy to dismiss what was going on in the U.S. But, there was one job that he held in the USA, that gave him everything he needed to know that the woke culture was right. I reminded him of a conversation we had. I said working for OSHA gave him insight, which obviously had an impact on him, because he told me that I should be careful.
He didn't disagree with me. On the contrary, he "liked" my comment.
So I deduce that he's a hard-rightwinger for personal preservation reasons. That's what we're fighting against. We have minorities who chose to look the other way because it's better for them, personally.

(4,170 posts)Am I allowed to think something is offensive without your permission? My wife is black, and I cant tell you what she said when I showed her this thread or my post would be deleted. If youre ok with comments about spitting watermelon seeds here on du, well, ok for you. I find it offensive and I dont need YOUR permission as to how I feel. You seem to think YOU can dictate to ME how I should feel. Nah.

(12,310 posts)But as a black man watching my brothers and sisters getting mowed down everyday, even shot in the back, i take more offense to Tim Scott telling everyone, America is not a racist country.
I've had enough. Sorry i offended some but im not going to remove it. I know one when i see one If the mods want to remove it then so be it.
Thankyou.

(13,493 posts)and I understand the anger at that. What i don't understand is perpetuating harmful stereotypes that some in this thread have gleefully been spreading. It's obvious Tim Scott is wrong. Racism is woven into the fabric of our society. And it's awful to deny that. I think some of the responses here have proven how wrong he is. A thread of "allies" who want to prove him wrong have done so better than they could have imagined.

I always feel than slamming African Americans, or other minorities as Uncle Tom, or assuming that all minorities must think the same is an insulting prejudice that we must overcome.
Not everyone has to group think.

(43,339 posts)Denial of institutional racism and stating that the new GA voting bill makes it overall easier to vote across the board are outright lies, NOT a matter of ideology.

I believe belonging to today's corrupt and insurrectionist gang in DC is in itself proof of very bad character, not doing a good job of hiding behind that aren't-we-nice?! face. So it's probably not the best time to look for high-minded conservative principles.
But even that doesn't mean he can't have personal beliefs and goals. How could he not? "I serve me" and "I hate Democrats and screw every Democratic Uncle Tom who thinks I should also kiss white liberal ass" might not seem much of an ideology, but for some it serves.

(58,785 posts)AA conservatives and especially for the few who openly break with the majority to identify with and further the conservative party. Beyond doubt for some it is strongly ideological, and of course some disagree with and despise Democrats and liberalism just as much as any other conservatives. But there are lots of other possible reasons, and of course skunks and whackjobs come in all races, but whatever, it's not the easy path.
