instead of bouncing up the the senate chambers to say hi and exchange warm hugs with all the friendly white nationalists that stormed the capitol on January 6th. They all looked like people in search of Republican bipartisanship.

He is a disgusting human to play black man for the GQP. Like Lindsay said, blacks can go anywhere and do anything, if they are republican. His words about no racism in MurKKKa. Ya think Smuckkker Smarlson would have Tim and his family
over for dinner, off camera?

(11,755 posts)We tell ourselves all kinds of things in order to justify our choices and actions. We turn a blind eye to things, we attribute actions and decisions of others to their "core being" while attributing those same actions and choices to ourselves and our friends to "circumstances".
Our brains are wired to protect us from harm, both physically and psychologically, sometimes in very interesting ways. Tim Scott is a Black man who I am sure has experienced the racism that is, in my opinion baked into the cake of American Society. That is not to say that everyone in America is racist or that the racism endemic to America cannot be purged. It is to say that it is all around us. In our history, in our systems of government, in some of our laws, past and present, and certainly in our traditions. You have to actively monitor your surroundings in order to notice and repudiate the small bits of racist information that seem to flow in by osmosis in media, art, politics, etc... That is hard work and can be exhausting.
Scott has experienced racism and discrimination, yet he subscribes to a party that almost completely rejects the notion that racism exists or that it has had any negative effects on people. I mean look at him. He is rich, a powerful Senator, etc... how can racism exist when he has achieved so much. That is an example of the cognitive dissonance (psychic discomfort) that is present in many people on the topic of race. He has had to, I am sure, use multiple psychological defense mechanisms to keep himself from having an emotional breakdown, and I am sure that it is almost natural to him now.
People who are honest emotionally and psychologically with themselves about race in the US, still struggle, but ultimately, they do not have to hold contradictory thoughts in their mind and contort their experiences to continue moving on.
