(82,849 posts)The old gentlemen's code says that the lady goes up first in case she stumbles he can catch her. Going down, the gentleman goes first so that the lady falls into him rather than down the stairs if she stumbles.
Also, it's just a nice and respectful thing to do.

(17,802 posts)Too many people in this country have been brainwashed that only grass is an acceptable ground cover and billions must be spent to poison, burn, and crush any other plant. Then they pour billions of tons of fertilizer on it causing runoff problems.
It has created virtual desserts for pollinators and is poisoning waterways.
Let the damned dandelions, and clover, and anything else that flowers just grow. Green lawns are a sign of a right wing mentality.

(17,460 posts)Can we get rid of this obsession we have with perfecting our lawns? Too many chemicals, too many noise polluting blowers/weed whackers/edgers, mowing grass to an eighth of an inch of it's life, etc. etc.

(34,747 posts)And, let's not forget all of the pesticides and fungicdes that get used on these monocultures, which wind up killing pollinators, and also wind up in our waterways, killing everything else.

(20,862 posts)President, in the middle of Washington DC ffs ! It's not a meadow beside a leafy glade.

(17,802 posts)So what if it is a public park. There especially we should set a standard and roll back the only green is good mandate from monsanto and dow.
Why should you be so overly concerned with a few flowers under his feet or in a park?
Let open spaces go back to meadows. We don't need short grass for anything.
OnDoutside
(20,862 posts)grass (which I referred to in my post), looked patchy and not in great shape. To want meadows in a park close to the White House is a nonsense suggestion.

(17,802 posts)So we will have to disagree on that one.
I could care less if clover grows on golf courses.

President Biden picked up a dandelion for his wife, Dr. Flotus Biden, before boarding Marine One for Georgia. Chivalry is back in the White House.

On edit: Actually, it's really just getting back to normal. We often saw similar affection between the Obama, and even between Dumya and Laura. The Formers were an anomaly. A horrible, nightmare of an anomaly.

(14,368 posts)I was raised in Michigan and the first flowers I would bring to my mother were dandelions and the first flowers my kids would bring to me were dandelions. They are such a pretty happy flower and so many neat things can be done with them, including blowing the fuzzies all around and watching them fly through the air. I have earrings with little dandelion seeds. I am so happy that these people are normal!

(16,296 posts)in the spring before they flowered. She would cook some bacon bits and make a bacon/vinegar dressing for the greens and then top the whole thing with a chopped boiled egg. Damn, now I want to go out and get some dandelion greens.
