It's about damn time. We have no problem trading with China, but Cuba's on our shit list because they're communists. Make sense to me.

(16,903 posts)My husband and I spent a week there in 2015 or 2016, don't remember. These folks are not to blame for what the Castros have done, they just want what everybody else wants, to educate their kids, have a decent job, etc.
When we were there, I saw old folks rummaging through garbage cans.. they didn't give much to older folks, because they were not "essential" to the economy..

(22,757 posts)Visiting a friend's parents. Wonderful people, you're right. We were in Santa Clara but also visited Havana and saw Hemmingway's home. Would love to go back someday.

I do hope to be able to visit Cuba again before I leave this earth.

Oh, that's right. That was planned by the USA Department of Defense instead, thankfully never approved by JFK!

----------
Operation Northwoods was a proposed false flag operation against the Cuban government that originated within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the United States government in 1962. The proposals called for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) or other U.S. government operatives to both stage and actually commit acts of terrorism against American military and civilian targets, blaming them on the Cuban government, and using it to justify a war against Cuba.

(32,726 posts)Batista suspended the 1940 Constitution and revoked most political liberties, including the right to strike. He then aligned with the wealthiest landowners who owned the largest sugar plantations, and presided over a stagnating economy that widened the gap between rich and poor Cubans.[9] Eventually it reached the point where most of the sugar industry was in U.S. hands, and foreigners owned 70% of the arable land.[10] As such, Batista's repressive government then began to systematically profit from the exploitation of Cuba's commercial interests, by negotiating lucrative relationships with both the American Mafia, who controlled the drug, gambling, and prostitution businesses in Havana, and with large U.S.-based multinational companies who were awarded lucrative contracts.
A lot like the Sha of Iran we installed, along with his repressive laws that we backed.
