I got my second Moderna shot last week. What a relief. I still wear a mask when I go out though. I've known about people not wearing masks because they've gotten both vaccine shots (or one J&J, whatever the case may be) and they feel safe. They don't understand that it's not about them but about the greater good of the community at large.

(2,158 posts)I thank the Sutter Health hotline that checked every nearby county until she found a physical location with a Johnson and Johnson dose for me and she made the appointment, as well.
Thank you Pioneer Pharmacy in Dos Palos, CA, population 5,351.

Don't be a part of this deranged government experiment!

(9,998 posts)The one about not getting a 2nd shot is also nice. Screams, I'm an A-Hole, and I'm not afraid to profess it here.

(9,998 posts)Some are having issues after the second shot, but they all pass within 12-24 hours. And none of these issues involve death, so anyone who gets the first shot and not the second, is a Loser IMO. I don't care if it provides 75% protection, it doesn't offer 95%, and so it's insufficient.

(435 posts)A 75 percent reduction in transmission is great.

(9,998 posts)I'm not going to debate the fact that 1 shot is better than none. But if you're overweight, and set a goal of losing 30 pounds, you don't declare victory after losing 20, and saying that it's better than nothing. You finish the job.
There's no valid reason for not getting the full dosage. None. If people were dropping dead from the 2nd shot, that would be one thing. But I fail to see why someone would do it half assed.

(435 posts)I would rather people take both, but one is a lot better than none.
Thanks for the welcome.

(44,939 posts)The reason both Moderna and Pfizer went with 2 shots rather than one, is that one shot did not produce a lot of antibodies.
After second shot, antibody levels go up dramatically.
And because of all the variants circulating, we are going to need all those antibodies.

(25,254 posts)I don't wear a mask when out walking, but I still wear one in stores. I am still hoping to plan a block party in my small neighborhood sometime soon, when the weather is better. I live in a kind of double cul-de-sac, think the Greek letter PI, with two ends that would be perfect for such a block party. I've been telling residents about my plan since last summer, and it may well be time to make it happen. Maybe do it over Memorial Day weekend?
While I'm better at staying home than a lot of people, I'm ready to get out and be in touch with others.
On a personal note, I had a heart attack right before Christmas, and my wonderful sister drove from Kansas to Santa Fe to be with me shortly after. We had not seen each other for over a year, and our time together was wonderful. She took excellent care of me. I am thinking of visiting her over the Fourth of July, in part because our brother has an apartment with a wonderful view of fireworks. Plus, of course seeing her, her three children, and her grandchildren. Hooray for family!

(9,998 posts)If everyone has been vaccinated, it's fine. Otherwise, speaking for myself, I would not want to interact in close proximity with a group of people at a party.
I'm looking at July/August before I feel comfortable being within a large group of people, eating, drinking and not wearing masks.

(25,254 posts)This neighborhood is not very large, and there's plenty of outdoor space. Personally, I will feel just fine.
I also live in Santa Fe, NM, where people have been incredibly good about wearing masks. When I took my walk today to my nearby park I was the only unmasked person there, even though the CDC tells us we are all fine outside, in the open air, without masks.
More to the point, all of us should do what we feel comfortable doing.

(8,997 posts)I haven't changed much except that I usually only wear one mask now instead of double masking. I look at that vaccination as one more layer of protection. I don't know when I will feel comfortable going maskless in stores. I'm not even close to being ready to eat in restaurants yet.
