Covid was most likely (and this is from public knowledge, not a cdc insider) an accidental contamination from the wild animal markets in china.
It was probably something like: A person who was selling bats was either directly contaminated by rubbing the virus into an open wound or mucus membrane, or used the same surface to butcher human food that had previously been contaminated by bat feces.
In other words, it's ignorance of the dangers of contact with wild animals. It's not intentional, it's not a lab that knew what they were doing.
Bad news is, those markets are not inspected, regulated or tested, and the prospect of future contaminations isn't curtailed unless the entire wild animal market is closed. And that's not possible because there are always secret black markets.
So, bottom line: As natural lands are further eroded, and humans and animals live in ever-tightening proximity, expect these kinds of outbreaks to become more frequent. Our only defense is to make sure our science and production is always progressing in case we need another quick remedy.
IMHO: Science is the new entity we should all put our faith in. "god"'s not gonna cut it.

(4,392 posts)Humanity, in general, is in imminent danger when we know ALL the facts, because scientists tested out all their questions in-vivo. Oppenheimer's thought: "I am become death"? If one values life, you'll personally only have that opinion for a short while anywhere in the universe, whatever makes you you, and I'd suppose that likely, currently, you won't like the "scientific" answer about how much humanity had been existentially valued. We, as humans, require things to make that all important "energy" to make us tick. Currently, our place in the universe is dependent on our sun...Those around will likely never know how, why, or when that environment could suddenly end, disturbing all the forces impacting humanity...and likely changing whatever you once thought about science...what then? The good thing is that science always comes up with facts that lead to bigger and more complicated questions to resolve.
Come on, where's your faith...

(16,646 posts)Their observation is that a virus that crosses over from animals to human rarely are immediately infectious as Covid-19. This virus appears to have started towards the end of 2019 and rapidly spread through China and quickly into Europe. The thought is that it accidentally escaped a lab, probably in Wuhan.
Either way, one can see that the experts are extremely worried about continued mutations.
