I think it has to do with the horrible spelling and syntax of the early video games Nintendo put out.

At one point in a fairly popular game when you lost, the screen faded to black, and the cryptic message “All your base are belong to us”. (You might have seen this too)

I think the word “pwned” was meant as you got “owned” and was just a simple typo, although I don’t know what game.

Back in the day, reading the owners manuals of all those electronics made in Japan bordered on a laugh riot. It was charmingly naive, in its own way.

Simple and yet so satisfying to beat each level. (And annoying to see "your princess is in another castle&quot

My whole family would take turns playing.

I really disliked what the 3D environment craze did to the Zelda games, so I figured BOTW was just another one of those. While there is that element to it (not going to get away from that these days) this version does have more in common with those old games than I expected.

Mostly though, I find video games have left me behind. Sad really, because for a very short time in the original Half Life multiplayer rooms, I was a King with just a crowbar.

I gather it rhymes with ‘owned’. Someone else might have better information.

Usually to celebrate a victory in an on-line multiplayer game.

Those games often have live chats for people in the game to communicate to each other, and when you're typing fast, mistake become common. "O" and "P" are adjacent on the keyboard, thus "pwned".

He he he, it doesn't even come up as a misspelling in my browser!

Like any subset of communication, games messages have their own vernacular.
