Students at a New Jersey high school logged into their remote landscape and design class on Wednesday morning expecting their teacher to lead a discussion about climate change. Instead, the teacher went on an expletive-filled, racist rant against Black Lives Matter and George Floyd, the man murdered by a Minneapolis police officer.
Hes not a hero, hes like a criminal, yelled the teacher, Howard Zlotkin, who is white, to a class of about 15 students over a Google Meet call, according to a video shared with The New York Times. He chastised students for, as he described it, making criminals into heroes because theyre Black or because they got a bad story.
One of the students filmed the rant with her phone and immediately contacted school officials. When they did not respond, she contacted a local news station, NBC New York, which reported on the story.
Now, an investigation is underway and Mr. Zlotkin, a science teacher at William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City, has been suspended with pay, said Mussab Ali, the president of the Jersey City Board of Education. Mr. Zlotkin was also suspended with pay from his position as an adjunct professor at Hudson County Community College, a spokeswoman confirmed.

His opinion about George Floyd has nothing to do with the class he's teaching so the wise thing would have be to STFU.

(130,532 posts)the police aren't ever supposed to be the judge, jury and executioner. Whether the suspect is George Floyd, or Jeffrey Dahmer or John Gotti or Ted Bundy, the police don't get to decide it's OK to kill him because he's "a criminal." Their authority is limited to detaining, arresting and investigating. Excessive force by police officers is no more excusable when it's committed against someone with a criminal history than it is when committed against a pillar of the community with a squeaky-clean past.

(10,297 posts)Even if George Floyd hadnt been a perfect little angel, then-Officer Chauvin had no right to take his life while he was in restraint.
I believe that there are certain circumstances where law enforcement officers have the right to use lethal force when facing death or injury or when someone elses life is in danger.
There are other circumstances where neither lethal force nor lethal restraint is justified. Mr. Chauvins life was not in danger when he was kneeling on George Floyds neck. Mr. Chauvin should be punished.

Makes you wonder how many other complaints by minority students were ignored.
