(2,330 posts)My 8 mos old met her first cat yesterday and quickly learned that Magic the cat DOES NOT like to play like Penny the dog
(Magic's sister) does. 😬

(14,784 posts)Once. Lesson complete. No blood was even drawn. That was about 13 years ago and she hasnt even looked at a cat since. I wonder how many times Id have had to tell her not to do that if the cat hadnt done it with one quick swipe to the muzzle.

(147,213 posts)He had never been around cats, so we were a little concerned, since we had two cats already living in the house. So, we brought him home and started him off in a kennel.
The cats? They did a double-take when they saw Dude, the dog. Neither had ever lived with a dog. They marched right up to the kennel and there was nose sniffing. Dude, whose history with cats was unknown, just wagged his tail, so we opened the kennel door and let him out. He was very careful around the cats, and the cats soon lost interest in this new member of the household, who appeared not to have much interest in them.
That evening, Dude was lying on his new dog bed. One of the cats climbed up on the bed with him and curled up against his back.
Later, after one of the cats died, we got a 6-week-old kitten. My introduction strategy was to put the cat on the floor to begin its exploration of the house. Dude walked in. He saw the kitten and came right over. He washed the kitten thoroughly with his tongue, and then flipped her upside down and started flea-ing her belly with his front teeth. That was that. Now, they're best friends.
Generally, dogs and cats coexist pretty well in the houses where they are pets.

(724 posts)I just picture him thinking to himself, "be a good boy, Major...don't hurt the cat." The minute everyone's back is turned, the cat attacks him, swats at him....and all along Major keeps telling himself..."don't react. it is okay....just be a good boy."
Honestly, the cat will be the boss. My brother has two large boxers and one small Bombay cat. Maya - the cat - is the boss of the house.

(4,170 posts)One small disagreement between a large rescue dog and my old cat. Dog got the worst of it, but they were friends after.

(792 posts)There is only one word that accurately applies to relationships with cats: Obedience. You will obey. End of lesson. Among other things:
Cats are twice as likely to survive a venomous snakebite than dogs.
From the moment they're in the air to the instant after they hit the ground, cats' bodies are built to survive high falls. An actual reflex allows cats to land on their feet. Its called the righting reflex. Their spines are super flexible, enabling them to wiggle around while theyre falling to correct themselves. (See video.)
Cat reflexes are excellent. (Typically, videos of a cat strike are played in slow motion in order for the human eye to appreciate their speed.)
A cat can jump up to 9 times its height while theyre standing.

Tip: Check out Animal Planet videos of the series "My Cat from Hell." On second thought, don't.

(28,215 posts)Hard rule: It's almost impossible to condition a grown cat to a dog but kittens do really well after a day or two of not being hurt by good pupsters.
My 2 cents, just from decades of experience.

(8,292 posts)I adopted two adult cats at various points in time and they both adjusted to the dogs we had at that time without incident. Well, one of the kitties (the female) really didn't like our bigger dog, but it wasn't so much fear as uncalled-for aggression towards him. She would find a higher vantage point (bed, back of couch) and take swipes at his face as he walked by. He was bewildered by it

(22,813 posts)I shouldn't have worried.
Some hissing the first day, then the dog kept his distance. Wouldn't even go near the cats' food. The dog turned out to be the one that was terrified.
After a couple of weeks, everyone was getting along, playing and sleeping together.
