The Dems should not waste time trying to get rethugs onboard

and move on to the next one.
The rethugs are going to vote against everything the Dems try to do and then when it gets passed with a dem majority they try to take credit for it, so don't waste time just give the rethugs the finger and go to a vote.

4. We barely have the majority, and in the Senate, we have Manchin.

We have to move some more voters to make Manchin irrelevant so we can do as you say, and ignore the pukes. Right now, though, Manchin is basically acting as a puke so we don't have a functioning majority. That makes it impossible to do what you are recommending - until we get more Senate seats (and we are also pretty weak in the House).

9. I agree with you. We need to see the big picture and play the long game.

Among other things, that means registering more voters, increasing turnout, and reaching people now. We've seen how turnout changed history in several of the past few elections. You can't pass things if you don't have enough allies in place to pass them.

The 2010 election should have been enough of a wake-up call, but I think by 2018 a lot more people realized it was time to treat every election as crucial.
