Do true Republicans have the backbone to fight for their Party?

And for their country?

And for their democracy?

Does the Party in Washington truly represent the Republicans throughout the country? That is the question.

Do Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney better represent the Republicans at large in this country?

Do they believe their Party is worth fighting for?

Would they challenge Trump and his hand-picked VP for the nomination in 2024?

Will they stand up now and speak out against the un-American and unpatriotic actions of their Party in Washington?

Or will they simply surrender to the forces now attacking them?

2. No. They'll grouse and groan but still rely on us to do the heavy lifting.

They won't acknowledge how their party has acted in the past, even before Trump, so to get anything done we'll need to push on without such unreliable "help". For which they will berate us because "unity".

The unity and bipartisanship ball is in their court. They have to play it. That means not allowing the GQP to block things, which means voting with Democrats in order to break the hellbeast they created.

Nobody in a position to make a difference will do it.

4. Arguing the "one true Republican" theory again?

Frankly, I'm not sure what a "true" repub is any more and I don't really give a rat's ass. I know I need to oppose them because they have no ideas (let alone good ideas) for the improvement of the US. Their best "policies" only improve things for a small segment of our population, and the wrong segment at that.

7. Are you asking about Eisenhower Republicans?

They were kicked out of the party long ago. Now you're not left with Reagan and Gingrich Republicans. Libertarians and self-deluded Evangelicals for the most part.
You need Moderates and people who really want to represent the people who voted for them to take back the party. But the GOP got rid of the moderates and anyone with a sense of community responsibility back in the 90's and 00's.

Now the GOP is all greed, racism, and entitlement. Good luck salvaging any of that.

8. "True Republicans" are fighting for their party. Unfortunately, ...

they and their party do not believe in a democratically elected republic.

I believe this is self-evident.

9. To ask that, you have to ask them what they think their Party is

If they think their party is the party of Eisenhower, Javits, Dirksen and Gerry Ford, is there anyone left, besides an aging few, who even WANTS that to be their party?

These days, the party seems to be McConnell, Trump, Gaetz, Greene, Cotton, Cruz, and Gohmert, and they are fine with that. Their who ideology is shaped by the Murdochs, anyway. They watch Fox Noise and regurgitate what they are fed there. There is nothing to fight for, in their eyes, except maybe the right to control the outcome of all elections, no matter the will of the voters.

10. What is a "true Republican"?

I don't really want to get personal but it kind of sounds like a "no true Scotsman" fallacy in even asking the question.

Seriously though, in order to discuss the question, as another response indicated, you have to define what a "true Republican" is, then we would have to agree to that definition to answer your other question.

The Republican Party has a long history from the 1850's where they were anti-slavery and for economic reform. We know that they have undergone a rightward shift starting in the 1900's and embraced "big business" during the end of the gilded age. That has been pretty consistent for the last 100+ years. They shifted to social conservatism during the Civil Rights era of the 1950's onward and became the Conservative/Libertarian party during the Reagan years and have continued to become more and more extreme.

The sad thing is that the question is whether Romney, who is a venture (some say vulture) capitalist who has also moved rightward since his stint as Governor of Massachusetts and Liz Cheney, who is the daughter of arch conservative and crook Dick Cheney and has also espoused some pretty extreme views as "true Republicans" or maybe "sane" Republicans because the rest of them are so incredibly messed up. Think about that and then ask yourself what is the Republican Party even about anymore. What was it about under Reagan? Bush Jr.?
