I need to share this because of the story about FL woman throwing a Whopper at a Burger King employee.
Yesterday, we did our grocery shop, which included a trip to Aldi. There, you need to give them a quarter to get a carriage, and when you return the carriage you get your quarter back.
We (my guy and I) arrived at the carriage station at the same time as a lovely white-haired woman. We paused to let her go first, but she indicated that we should go because she needed to dig out her quarter.
We went in, Al put his quarter in and retrieved a carriage, and walked it over to her. "This is for you," he said, and then he turned back to the carriages to get us one.
You should have seen the look on her face. It was like we made her day.
And that made my day.
Al told me later that it made his day to see her smile like she did.
25 cents and an act of kindness... and 3 people had a "feel good" day. It goes to show you... it doesn't take much.
And if you can't be kind, at the very least, don't be mean.

(17,984 posts)For quite some time now I have handed my basket off to a person walking up. They start to hand me a quarter, I say, Pass it along! Smiles, God bless you and thanks are the answers I get.
Just a small gesture can change a persons whole day.
Thanks for passing that along.

(6,079 posts)looking around like she needed help so I asked her if I could help her. Turns out she needed something from the top shelf that she couldn't reach. I'm pretty short but managed to get it for her and she was so grateful. You're right, sometimes little things can make the rest of your day pretty good.

(6,591 posts)I've lived coast to coast in the US & travelled a lot of the world & I don't recall hearing that term used for a shopping cart.

(30,613 posts)That nonsense with the quarters is why I don't shop there. Too many other options nearby.
I'm curious - what part of the country calls them "carriages?" I have always called them "carts," and I've also heard "basket," but never "carriage."

(1,816 posts)It is a common occurrence here for people to give you a cart, decline a quarter for it and say " pass it on ".
It always makes me smile.

(47,041 posts)They would probably be totally perplexed why a quarter could make someone happy.
They miss the whole richness and goodness of life, the joy in every day events.

(3,475 posts)Never in the USA. Do they do it to prevent people from stealing the carts?
MissMillie
(38,556 posts)You get your money back when you bring the cart back.
It's a what the store does to avoid having to hire people to collect carts in the parking lot.
