Anyone who uses the word "vanguard" to describe any contemporary political movement in the U.S should put away their copy of the Communist Manifesto so they can at least refresh their language, if not their ideas.

It is generally replaced in the 20th century by "shock troops" or "storm troopers".

While specially equipped for assaulting enemy positions, they nevertheless suffer very high casualties. The survivors are kept in the formations, which are replenished with recruits, since the surviving veteran troops are needed to provide experience, training, and unit cohesion. Thus, unless wounded and disabled, a member of the vanguard is unlikely to survive the war.
