There's a good article in Salon touching on this and it helped me focus my thoughts. First off, Liz Cheney is almost as bad as the rest of them. Substantively there's little daylight between her and the likes of Gomert, Boebert and MGT. The WaPo and NYT, forever in search of the moderate GOP will give her the martyr treatment but she's no Rockefeller or even Barry Goldwater for that matter. When it comes to counting the votes the only difference between Cheney and a cipher like Ronny Jackson is stylistic.
The fact that she's chosen to acknowledge the undeniable reality that Joe Biden won a fairly comfortable (by recent standards) victory in November and is the duly elected President of the United States does not make her Rosa Parks. There is no civil war in the GOP, there is merely a tiny handful of elected GOPers who, on a very narrow question, have the "courage" to admit that 2+2 is 4 while the rest of the cult insists that 2+2 is 5.
For those that say "no, we need rational leaders in the GOP" or "she's not as crazy as Congressman X" - I say give it up. During my lifetime the GOP has morphed from an often-malignant band of dirty tricksters to a full blown and quite open fascist, neo-Confederate and anti-democratic terrorist group. There is no return from this drift and the presence of Liz Cheney in their leadership won't make any difference.
The GOP should be encouraged to get as crazy as possible as soon as possible. It's going to happen anyway so let's get it on. I encourage the GOP to promote as many ill-informed, incompetent and unbalanced "leaders" as they can. Say what you want about people like Nixon, James Baker or even Newt Gingrich - they weren't mediocrities or dummies. They were formidable foes. One of the advantages we have is the breadth of experienced, talented, compassionate and intelligent elected officials we have on our side. Meanwhile across the aisle, the GOP bench is less than thin when it comes to smarts, likeability and reason but thick with bluster, idiocy and incompetence. The dumber you are the higher you rise in their hierarchy, fine by me.
I suspect in the end they won't remove Cheney from leadership because of her pedigree and the negative press coverage it will likely incite - but I sure hope they do.

(10,749 posts)They express exactly what Ive been thinking but that I havent focused on enough to post. This is exactly what Ivebeen thinking.
Putting aside the current issue, Cheney will vote the party line.
And as others have written, this is not disarray. The Republican Partys goal is the erosion/destruction of American democracy. Its no longer whispered about. It is the core of their party.

(24,467 posts)Funny thing is, Cheney was far more consistent on Trumps agenda then the replacement has been. I am sure that will change, but she's no Liz Cheney....which further erodes any kind of coherent legislating capabilities that they had.

(58,785 posts)collapses, and I do hope this hurries that, she'll still be around, in or out of congress, picking up the pieces.
Never imagined I could think that was a good thing, but then I never thought the alternative would get to this.

(18,486 posts)And am a little distressed to see some Democrats treat her as if she's some kind of a noble hero.
She's neither brave nor extraordinarily praiseworthy. It doesn't take much courage to do what she's doing - especially when you're the scion of a wealthy and established political family. She's simply playing the long game and, unlike her colleagues, can see further than 2 inches past her nose. She knows this madness will eventually end and she's positioning herself for when it does. And when it does, she will be just as toxic as she's always been. In the meantime, she'll be just fine.

(16,926 posts)So, as you say - let them 'have at it' - and suffer the consequences!
It is not for us to provide 'marriage counseling' for them (GAWD knows that individual members have never found that to be an option for them anyhow) - but YES, let us stand back and let them EAT THEIR OWN!

(102,236 posts)ago that left me in dread of ever dealing with him again (and that was in addition to his ideology).
But this attitude of the OP is extremely SHORT-SIGHTED and lacking in an understanding of the consequences staring us in the face. Not JUST from this issue with Liz Cheney, certainly, but it compounds the coming risk to ALL of us from a "win at all costs" and "don't give a shit about democracy" Republican minority.
It is an "I hate Liz Cheney, so consequences be damned. I WANT my IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION" attitude..."
VERY short-sighted indeed.

(58,785 posts)the difference between that and fascistic goals of ending government of, by and for the people is ENORMOUS. That one commonality with her completely overwhelms ALL other ideological differences.
Imo, "short-sighted" understates the handicap. We still have a wannabe dictator out there with tens of millions of angrily passionate loyalists, including in congress. If DU simply weren't here some morning, and CNN and MSNBC went down and came back up reporting faux news that same day, just imagine all the WTFs -- and no one to explain what happened.

(19,348 posts)Based upon past performance, statistically, Cheney is likely to be on board with Trump in 4 years time (unless they lose in a double digit landslide in 2024).

Agree with you analysis, but disagree with your assessment that Liz Cheney will not be removed from leadership. I think she will definitely be removed.

(23,372 posts)Theres a big difference politically between her and Trump. While I understand the idea of seeing the opportunity in the fascistization of the Republicans, its a dangerous game and it is best to smash the fascists.

Political expediency and political opportunism are the only things he knows about politics. He has no idea whatsoever what the Constitution says and he cares even less.

(6,829 posts)If she's out of the leadership, Pelosi needs to call Cheney immediately and get her on that committee to study Jan 6th within the hour.
Tbh, with the #Cult45 wing of the Republican party in ascendance, Liz Cheney's role as policy director was moot anyway. Rs have no policies and no proposals other than obstruction and fealty to whatever insane idea Dear Leader comes up with.
She should ride out getting dumped, set herself atop the Jan 6th commission for now, and watch the #TrumpCrimeFamily get taken down by Merrick Garland, Letitia James, e Jean Carroll, Summer Zervos etc.
Her father and the old guard Rs obviously aren't riding in to save her

(32,699 posts)I'm not sure I agree with this post. We are one country. The crazier the GOP gets, the worse off all of us are and the closer we get to failed state status.

(70,686 posts)She's a total, despicable wingnut. Whether she's actually principled on one thing or cynical, she's positioning herself to come out on top in the long run.
She will be able to put her party back together after they have rid themselves of Drumpf.
She will be a formidable opponent for us later.
