The level of brainwashing of 30 percent of our country is not unlike 1930s Germany - nor is the big business and scummy politician complicity.

(43,049 posts)After WWI, Germany was it with a huge reparations tab, and their Depression and inflation was far worse than ours. Hitler promised help. (we got FDR, and Germany got Hitler-- pretty lucky for us, eh?)
Germany had very little experience with democracy, and the Weimer government was new, unstable, and corrupt. Germany had only even existed as a country for about 50 years at the time, and still hadn't figured all of it out.
One of their biggest fears was Stalin next door pushing his way into Germany and their industrial base.
Powerful German interests, like the Krupps, thought Hitler was a controllable alternative to Communism-- they were wrong. He was just as bad in his own way, and not controllable at all.
I really, really hope we're not in such bad shape.
