The three victims were shot in their limbs and expected to survive, officials said at a news conference. Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson says the girl pulled a handgun from her backpack and fired multiple rounds inside and outside Rigby Middle School in the small city of Rigby, about 95 miles (145 kilometers) southwest of Yellowstone National Park.
A female teacher disarmed the girl and held her until law enforcement arrived and took her into custody, authorities said, without giving other details. Authorities say they're investigating the motive for the attack and where the girl got the gun.
We don't have a lot of details at this time of why' that is being investigated, Anderson said. We're following all leads.

Seems like an unusual case, due to the perpetrators age and gender. Its good that that more weren't injured but I have to what prompted this specific awfulness.

(3,282 posts)are quite rare. Something like 2.5% of mass shooters over the past 40 years are females.
The data I looked at only considered 123 shootings, so their definition of a mass shooter is probably conservative.

(3,906 posts)Ronald Reagan, this is what happened to your America. Another day, another mass shooting. This one by a twelve year old girl. Things like this almost not newsworthy any more.

(2,234 posts)On a Facebook knitting group I belong to from a woman who was at her doctors office very near the school when the shooting happened. Her kids know the girl, and it was definitely a case of the girl having been bullied.

(18,486 posts)Because there's a good chance they'd have been in fear of their lives and had to shoot the girl.
The story doesn't indicate her race, but if she is white, it's possible the cops would have shown some restraint and not felt the need to kill her. But it was better not to take the chance.
