Aggressively share this with those who think paying burger flippers a living wage will somehow result in $20 Big Macs or whatever.

(113,283 posts)Imagine paying your staf a living, thriving wage. What a concept.
I think we now have an In-n-out burger here. Alas, it is clear up on the northeast side of town.

(32,674 posts)was crying because no one will work for him for $11/hr. I explained to him it's just like his gas prices. When they go up he sells less gas. If he were to pay $15/hr the good workers from other places would come work for him. He still doesn't get it.

(24,284 posts)One of the things that allow them to do this is they are not a franchise but are all privately owned by the same person. This means they are not burdened with paying a franchise fee every month. It also means they produce all their own goods and have control over the quality, price and consistency of those goods.
35 years ago I sold franchises (not the food business) and I can tell you they are a bad business model. The business plan we provided for franchisees always included the lower end of the pay rate for our industry. That's why so many of them fail and In and Out Burgers don't. There are also other factors in play such as In and Out exclusively promotes from within. You've got a much better shot at a decent career there than you do at Taco Bell or Subway, so you turn over less help.
Franchise fees and rent affect how much the food cost way more than paying someone $15 an hour.

It can be done, because some employers are actually doing it.

(25,853 posts)upping wages has an astonishingly small impact on the cost of things like food in a restaurant. Every time I read such an analysis, it says that food prices will rise maybe 20 or 30 cents overall. I have no idea how much that trivial increase depends on other things staying the same. It is clear to me that burger flippers and their ilk deserve a living wage.
I've had my share of jobs at minimum wage, and I'm old enough to know when minimum wage was close to a living wage. So I know what it's like to try to subsist on minimum wage, and I don't wish that on anyone.

(36,788 posts)My niece works part time in a restaurant and HAD to work double shift because they were short and a waitress did not come in.
I asked if she got overtime or extra pay........ fat chance!
She got a better job and put in her notice.
