Julia Ward Howe, feminist, abolitionist, peace activist, (could somebody post it here? My computer won't let me.). It was a response to the horrors of our civil war, and the then-raging Franco-Prussian war. We are indebted to the feminists and social activists of the time.
So, Happy Mothers' Day to all, but remember that it wasn't about flowers and cards and dinner out.
