South Carolina will close state and some local government offices to mark Confederate Memorial Day

South Carolina will close state government offices and some local government offices Monday to mark Confederate Memorial Day.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina will close state government offices Monday to mark Confederate Memorial Day.

Some local government offices will also close in observation of the holiday that is held every year on May 10.

South Carolina is among a handful of states in the South with such an official holiday.

State offices in Alabama and Mississippi closed down for their Confederate Memorial Days late last month.

South Carolina chose May 10 because it is the day when Confederate Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson died in 1863 after he was wounded by his own troops and the day Union soldiers captured fleeing Confederate President Jefferson Davis in Georgia in 1865.

.... destruction of the United States so that rich people could keep human beings as slaves because
God made them to be 2nd class citizens. I keep wondering if we would not have been better off if
we had lined up and shot the leaders of CSA @ the end of the civil war.

BTW the south was on the wrong side in the civil war.

that people like Mitch McConnell prefer over factual history.

The "Lost Cause" lie is actually divisive and politically motivated indoctrination - everything McConnell and his ilk (all those recent state laws) claim teaching factual history is now.

To mark, celebrate or commemorate, "Confederate Day" is a continuation of the "Lost Cause" lie taught in schools throughout the South.

To reinforce the thinking introduced through those lies that claims the Confederacy was not a collection of traitors but was, instead, a collection of unfairly treated people who were only standing up for their rights. That there was "good in slavery" and "slaves loved their masters", and once slavery ended all the systemic racism went away in America.

It's not heritage - it's clinging to hate. It's clinging to ignorance. It's being proud of your ignorance and hate.

... included in the Constitution in order to placate southern slave owners. However you can see the
fear in the GOP nationwide today as the push all those voter suppression laws because changing demo-
graphics and social wants will make it very difficult for the GOP to win elections in the future especially
in the former states that made up the C.S.A..

South Carolina is 35% Black and 11% and growing Hispanic.

Passing all kinds of laws to do so. Voter suppression, attacks on factual history are two examples.

I'm hoping the changing demographics help. I know the GOP fears that change will hurt them but I worry about the damage they can do while they hold state power.

Getting out the vote is important - especially in local and state elections. Change the state dynamic from GOP to Democratic, in all usages of the word.

1) The liberal redneck on Confederate Memorial Day. https://www.democraticunderground.com/1017656012

2) Joe Biden's popularity will continue with his projects because most Americans support them and he and
Vice President Kamala are building a more diverse and much stronger democratic party as the republicans
are eating their own and staying loyal to the biggest traitor in the history of America, Donald J Trump. Re-
publicans are not opposed to Biden & Harris's Vaccine/Infrastructure/Voting Rights/Education/Student Loan
plans not because they are afraid they will not work but they know they will work and that is what they are
afraid of.

Other ancestors left Europe in similar circumstances.

Sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is to walk away from trouble.

The flag, the statues, all of it.

Do we celebrate any other defeated enemies in the US? No. Why the "Confederacy"?
