(12,207 posts)The "Nazi drum" was a bit heavy-handed, but I overlooked that in favour of the rest of the 'toon.

(53,139 posts)Twitter and Facebook really did fuel and "energize" the monster, one of the many downsides of social media.
BobTheSubgenius
(12,207 posts)I don't use Twitter, but it sure popped up on FB. I use FB very, very little now; mainly just to keep tabs on far-flung friends.
PatSeg
(53,139 posts)and that is only when I see a post here. As for Facebook, it has always been about friends and family for the most part for me. I do go to a couple of private political groups, but I don't use Facebook for my news.
I know people who really like Twitter, but I cannot really see it performing any useful purpose whatsoever and with Trump it caused a great deal of damage to the country.

(12,207 posts)Jeff Tiedrich comes to mind - right near the top of the heap.
As a forum for exposition, it is useless. It's a gotcha! medium, not one to convince or inform. I'm extremely glad there are people here that curate the Twitterverse for us and give us mainly wheat and very little chaff.

(53,139 posts)I've seen some clever and pithy Tweets posted here, but I'm glad someone else seeks them out. I've never liked Twitter and if someone has something important to say, limiting them to 280 characters is ridiculous. Everything these days has to be fast and short, because people's attention spans are so very limited. Being bombarded with information (and disinformation) all day, we are barely absorbing what we see and read. Sometimes MORE is not better, it is just more.
BobTheSubgenius
(12,207 posts)And, being "just more," it is actually less, in most cases. I don't want to have to wade through 150 tweets to find something interesting or valuable. In that mode, it's not too long before I glaze over and am all but unable to recognize that one grain of goodness on the beach.

(53,139 posts)is something I say frequently. More ice cream, more perfume, or more cats does not necessarily make one's life better. Just because I can access almost any information in the world whenever I want, does not mean I should.
My attention span has gotten shorter and shorter over recent years, as I am always being lured to another article, post, video, or meme. In the process, I am not assimilating much of what I am consuming. Too much clutter and not enough real substance.
BobTheSubgenius
(12,207 posts)But, I've had a great run.
PatSeg
(53,139 posts)but I've seen in younger people too, just not always as bad. They are more inclined to keep staring at their phones while watching TV, carrying on a conversation, eating a meal, grocery shopping, or taking a vacation. There is an "I can't miss anything" attitude all the time.
BobTheSubgenius
(12,207 posts)It's aberrant behaviour, IMO.
You want to see people go into Twitch Mode? If you are with a group in a restaurant, get everyone to agree that the first person to use their phone for whatever reason picks up the tab for everyone.
Rock and a hard place.

(53,139 posts)And what is really disturbing is that for many very young people, they don't remember things being any different. For them, this is how people communicate and behave. it is like having a powerful addiction your whole life and not knowing what being sober and straight is like. If you take away their phones, I am sure the withdrawals are brutal.
BobTheSubgenius
(12,207 posts)I bet there are studies that confirm your addiction thesis.

(12,207 posts)I'm not sure which they'd have cried the loudest about - robot hero down, or the treatment of the flag. I'm guessing they'd understand that it was aimed at them.

use homophobic memes ala the "CNN" report?

That was their last words and thoughts instead of saying goodby to their families.
