Vaccine hesitancy has become the predominant mindset of Americans who have not yet been inoculated, making the drive for herd immunity ever more elusive.
Just 11% of American adults who remain unvaccinated say they definitely will get the shot, while 34% say they definitely wont, according to a new poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Another 27% say they probably will and 27% say they probably wont.
The vaccination rush has slowed, and President Joe Biden is meeting virtually with six governors today to discuss how to revive momentum. Biden wants 70% of Americans vaccinated by the 4th of July. That's about what some experts say is needed to get the pandemic under control. Right now less than half of Americans had received at least one shot.

(142 posts)Some people who more recently became eligible haven't been able to make appointments in their area yet.
I was surprised to see an old, handicapped man getting his shot yesterday. I'm certain he was eligible back in February. Perhaps, some of the more timid people are starting to get it now that most people they know have gotten it.

(7,526 posts)About 68.7% of the population 16 and over has received at least one COVID vaccine. If all of the 38% of the people not yet vaccinated who definitely or will probably get vaccinated follow through with at least one shot, we'll end up with about 80.6% Americans age 16+ vaccinated with at least one shot.
About 51.4% of the population 16 and over is fully vaccinated against COVID. If 38% of the people not fully vaccinated get fully vaccinated, we'll end up with 69.9% of the Americans age 16+ fully vaccinated.
About 46.3% of the full population have been partially vaccinated and 34.8% fully vaccinated. With 12-15 age group eligible now, hopefully these whole population numbers spike in the coming weeks.

(10,076 posts)but waiting for the vaccine. That is up from 76% in Feb, so the hesitancy is getting less as they see the world being ravished. That is one of the problems, I don't think a lot of those in the US are not seeing the World News.

(Reuters) -Canadas drug regulator said on Friday that doses of Johnson & Johnsons COVID-19 vaccine recently delivered to the country were produced at a Baltimore plant where the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) halted production.
Health Canada said in a statement that it will hold the vaccine doses until it is satisfied they meet its standards, and is consulting with J&J and the FDA. The first shipment of 300,000 J&J vaccine doses arrived in Canada earlier this week. https://www.metro.us/canada-receives-jjs-covid-19/

(10,076 posts)vaccine is too new and she is afraid of side affects down the road. I talked to her this morning about another friend of mine who, two years younger than her and he was rushed to the hospital and put into an induced coma within a day of being tested positive. He was in the coma for 10 days before he came out, still cannot speak. He lives in the same city as both of us and when I told her how careful he was (he got it from a business partner), she is now going to make an appointment to get the vaccine. I have siblings that are antivaxxers who I will not even waste my time trying to convince them otherwise, they are lost but there are still some that just need that push.

(2,304 posts)I have a HS freshman (14) who hates shots.... screams about tetanus booster...cried over HPV and meningitis...who is demanding to get this one along with all his friends many of whom live in deeply red parts of Iowa.
He and his friends are desperate for safely meeting face to face -- going to summer camp, doing things that have been denied them for the last 15 months.
That will hopefully push us in the right direction -- plus it is really the only way to insure that schools don't become superspreaders in the fall when everyone will have to go back to crowded old school buildings with bad ventilation.
Assuming the CDC follows the FDA tomorrow in giving the Pfizer EUA, then there will be a wave of JH and HS kids who want to have normal school, band, choir, sports, etc without helping to spread a deadly virus to their friends, parents, and grandparents.
Eventually, schools will hopefully put this on the required vaccination list. If you don't want a vaccine -- fine -- forfeit your right to a free public education. You can home school, but you will not receive a dime of taxpayer money for books, supplies, etc. Do the same to private schools -- if they allow anyone who is not vaccinated without a valid MEDICAL reason (allergic to vaccine, compromised immune system) they forfeit all their Title funds and those funds revert to the public school of record based on the student's address. Let's see how many of these antivaxxers are willing to pay full freight for private indoctrination or stay home and teach their kids.

(21,973 posts)At the start of the pandemic, they were all "herd immunity will take care of this!" Now, that herd immunity is in reach, they're not interested.
I think there is some good news though when it comes to herd immunity, which is that it might not require 70-80% of the population to get vaccinated to achieve. The CDC recently estimated that maybe a third of all Americans were infected with Covid in the past year. Those people (the ones who survived, at least) will have some measure of protection against the virus.
The protection won't be as good as getting vaccinated, and there will obviously be overlap between people who were infected and people who were vaccinated. But if a lot of the people who refuse to get vaccinated were already infected, that does help us get closer to herd immunity.

********QUOTE******
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_helps_those_who_help_themselves
.... ... The phrase originated in ancient Greece as "the Gods help those who help themselves" and may originally have been proverbial. It is illustrated by two of Aesop's Fables and a similar sentiment is found in ancient Greek drama. Although it has been commonly attributed to Benjamin Franklin, the modern English wording appears earlier in Algernon Sidney's work.
The phrase is often mistaken as a scriptural quote, though it is not stated verbatim in the Bible. Some Christians have criticized the expression as being contrary to the Bible's message of God's grace.[1] A variant of the phrase can also be found in the Quran (13:11).[2][3] ....

(11,949 posts)Facts be damned. Over 100 million vaccinated. Less than 10,000 of them got Covid. Less than 150 dead. Those are the facts. You are vaccinated you are as safe as driving to the grocery store.
But some of our Brothers and Sisters on DU are not impressed and still think Covid is a huge risk to vaccinated people.
I dont have a problem with anyone who wants to keep distancing and wearing masks. Probably will reduce your chance of getting the flu.
But politically once everyone who wants the jab gets it we will have to reopen the economy. Joe even said by July 4 we will reopen.
