A) You pay too little
B) You're an asshole
C) Both A and B

(8,817 posts)It is illegal to hire an illegal immigrant. So the employer just sends a phony social security number.
Anyone hear of ANY employer being charged for hiring illegals? They simply tell the feds that that is the number the Illegal Immigrant gave them. Evidently, they don't catch it for three months, so the employer fires them and hires a whole new group and does this over and over. The best thing is they don't have to pay the Illegal Immigrants their last pay check, so get a week or two of free labor as a bonus.
For as long as I have been working, fifty five years, I have heard the same exact thing:
"We can't find anyone who wants to work" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The employers never finish their sentence:
"We can find anyone who wants to work, for what we want to pay" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone ever seen ICE conducting a Green Card raid on massive construction sites??????????
Not only that, with an Illegal, the employers is able to avoid paying workers comp, unemployment, etc etc etc.....
Of course they WITHOLD it from the employee's paycheck, but never send it in......

(32,080 posts)Sadly, that sign is spot-on, even though it's a spoof. Reminiscent of my job hunting nightmare. Some of the openings I saw required a Master's degree for a $12/hr job. Not kidding. Then there were the prying questions during interviews. "What are you doing with your time since being laid off?" I'm sitting around eating fucking bon-bons during the few minutes I'm not spending looking for and applying to jobs.

(58,785 posts)Lol, long before Covid I remember a store on a tourist street by a lake with an outside sign declaring that because we (tourists) were stealing so much, unfortunately... Unbelievable! I don't remember the rest, and of course not the inside of the shop.
Btw, of course owners notably suspicious of, and even hostile toward, their customers are almost always conservative, and strongly so. Like people who always badmouth tourists. Conservatives tend to have a darker view of human nature, so that's almost a given, though individuals can surprise us.
Reminds me of an antique shop owner who accepted a check for $180 from me without ID (I'd misplaced it and it was my first time in there) even though it was while she was giving a police report for a far more expensive chest purchased with a kited check. She apparently believed by her customers were basically honest and hadn't forgotten it, or that she wanted me back. She didn't care to live her life otherwise. On my part, I didn't ask her if she at least leaned socially liberal, just knew it. I still have the little Martha Washington sewing chest to remember her by.

(58,785 posts)One thing I read that really surprised me is that conservatives can genuinely LIKE all the people they distrust as a normal thing, the way I like people I assume will mostly tend to behave okay. Now me, if I don't trust one of them not to cheat and betray I'm not going to like him so much, but I don't see that as normal in everyone.
And when an intensely authoritarian business owner I temporarily once worked for kept the supply room locked, from what I've since read she likely underneath was not just guarding her pencils from the potential thieves she was surrounded with, but also may have been, in a kindly, even generous way that she didn't need to think about, protecting her employees from the temptation to steal.
The very byzantine systems that couple felt necessary to protect their business from its employees, btw, were what finally drove me to read about conservative psychology. They certainly weren't the first who had me wondering, though.

(24,284 posts)I spent most of my working life working at printing companies that were family owned with the owner on the premises with 15 or so employees and everybody on a first name basis. Some were better than others, but the really good ones had one thing in common. On payday the owner came around and handed out the paychecks. When he handed you your check, he said "Thank You".
That's whats missing in much of today's working world. It wasn't even that common decades ago.
ProfessorGAC
(65,010 posts)...a huge % of people don't get paychecks handed out anymore.
For decades, we got checks in the intracompany mail. Then, they went direct deposit.
We just got the pay receipt in the company mail. Then, they went full online.
Now, we only saw the receipt if we went online.
What your boss did was cool, but as a manager for 35 years, I never even had the opportunity to do that.
But, thanking people regularly for their efforts goes a long way.
We got it where I worked, paycheck pass out or no.
Maybe that's why the turnover rate was typically only under 5% yearly, with 1.5-2% being retirements.
Looks like we agree on the importance of this!

(32,634 posts)I'm retired now but I worked in printing almost 40 years for many different employers large and small. It used to be that offset printing companies were single proprietors or family-owned and managed. But nowadays there are so few families, because the 2nd (or 3rd) generation had no interest in keeping it going. The younger ones went to college and became doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc.
Your point about the personal thanks and appreciation of the boss/owners - it was very true for many years but it's all gone now.

I think that the pandemic woke a lot of people up to the fact that they should either get busy living or get busy dying. So, a lot of them retired and left the workforce which created openings for younger workers who have left behind the shittier jobs.

(3,495 posts)since when is it the Government's responsibility to force people back into the workforce?!? It's like the only point in living is to work and if you don't want to participate in the corporate rat race the Government needs to sh-t on you, ridicule you and starve you to death.
I watch a fair amount of reality TV following folks who literally live on the edge of society (last Alaskans for example). "Working" to them is just earning enough to pay for food and rudimentary shelter. They prefer to have their freedom; choosing when to wake up, where to go and how to spend their waking hours. In some respects I envy the folks who've turned their back on "civilization" and live their lives on their own terms (and are willing to sacrifice to live their life style and suffer the consequences).
Funny how the "freedom from Government" types are willing to utilize it to force others to conform to some dystopian vision they think is heaven (and never see the irony in their position).

Now, I didnt get into nursing for the money - NO ONE goes into nursing to get rich - but for damned sure here in the South, where its right to work (your ass off for no pay because unions are bad), nurses dont get SHIT.
No nurse I know really cares about Nurses Week. We just want decent pay. Same for teachers, etc.

I don't want to be ungrateful, but he made them during nurses week . . for all the staff including CNA's, housekeeping, therapists, dietary, etc.
I spent tens of thousands of dollars, years of dedication, effort and pain becoming a registered nurse. Everybody who isn't a doctor does not equal nurse, okay?
After the year we've had - . . . you know, I thought I would be one of those nurses that works till she becomes a resident somewhere - but now speaking even as someone with a deep love of nursing, I wish retirement were closer. Just. Enough already.
Happy nurses' week. I appreciate you. All of you.

(2,350 posts)Nurses Week now gets celebrated out to all the staff. OK, all well and good, but they dont do that for all the other weeks, though. At least not at the hospitals Ive worked in.
And yeah, I know what you mean about wanting to be closer to retirement after this last year. COVID has been hell, regardless of which floor, ICU or department you work in. And the lip service for all is frontline people has been just that. I certainly never saw an extra dime in hazard pay or the like - like everyone talked about, including Congress, last year.

Apparently there is a shortage of backpackers and overseas students who will work for the 'experience' and little pay.
(It's the pandemic lockdown, stupid!)
Some employers/exploiters seem to think there is an endless supply of non-working casual workers out there they can tap into to hire and fire at short notice.

(10,185 posts)Not living it up, but I can get by. I have a son in college and hes working on being self employed. I agree with him that a college education isnt the spring board to success it once was. I think a college education is great if you can pull it off, but dont expect it to pay off financially. There are some exceptions of course, but I tell my kid I cant really give him career advice because everything has changed. Few people nowadays work for the same company for years like they used to. Few companies even last that long.
I remember the old days getting a check on Friday. That stopped for me probably 25 years ago. All direct deposit nowadays. Its actually better but I kind of missed the whole Pay Day experience.

(63,221 posts)The one thing that has always infuriated me was having to fill out a job application and list the EXACT information that was on my resume. I have been with the same company for the past 16 years, but even they want us to go into their new system and do the same thing instead of just uploading our resume.
Am I missing something, or is this completely idiotic and a waste of time? I am thinking it is a test to see just how much bullshit you will put up with.

(10,185 posts)Its an ongoing problem with data thats entered in a specific system and not easily transferred to a different system. I suppose in a couple decades it will be resolved but it seems like those who buy a new program or have one developed dont make interchangeability a requirement. The ones who do the buying arent the end users so its no skin off their backs.

(720 posts)I think that a large percentage of applicants bail out of the process before completing an application when the hiring company makes them jump through all sorts of hoops to apply. I'm seeing more and more companies, especially ones that can invest in having decent HR departments, moving towards asking applicants simply submit a resume and maybe a cover letter, or perhaps a few customized answers to questions. For a first round of evaluations there really shouldn't be a need for anything else.
I totally bail on excessively and pointlessly long online applications. A company that makes it a pain in the ass for me to apply to it is probably not one for whom I want to work.

Fortunately, I haven't had to go through the process in a while, but my company keeps updating it's HR/Review/Work History system so we are constantly having to go in to update our data. It is a huge PITA.
