Liz Cheney carries the mantle of Margaret Chase Smith. NOT Susan Collins

Apparently Susan Collins like to fancy herself as a modern-day Margaret Chase Smith. Seriously. She does.

WRONG. WRONG WRONG SUSAN! Susan Collins is just another partisan mealy-mouthed worm subservient to the every whim and order of malicious sleaze bag Mitch McConnell. She's no moral beacon. She's no hero.

The person who does carry the mantle of Margaret Chase Smith is Liz Cheney.

Let's rub Susan's face in it. Very publicly.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Chase_Smith

Margaret Madeline Chase Smith (December 14, 1897 – May 29, 1995)[1] was an American politician. A member of the Republican Party, she served as a U.S Representative (1940–1949) and a U.S. Senator (1949–1973) from Maine.[2] She was the first woman to serve in both houses of the United States Congress, and the first woman to represent Maine in either.[3] A moderate Republican, she was among the first to criticize the tactics of Joseph McCarthy in her 1950 speech, "Declaration of Conscience".[4]

...

On June 1, 1950, Smith delivered a fifteen-minute speech on the Senate floor, known as the "Declaration of Conscience," in which she refused to name McCarthy directly but denounced "the reckless abandon in which unproved charges have been hurled from this side of the aisle."[25] She said McCarthyism had "debased" the Senate to "the level of a forum of hate and character assassination."[4] She defended every American's "right to criticize ... right to hold unpopular beliefs ... right to protest; the right of independent thought."[26] While acknowledging her desire for Republicans' political success, she said, "I don't want to see the Republican Party ride to political victory on the four horsemen of calumny—fear, ignorance, bigotry, and smear."[14] Six other moderate Republican Senators signed onto her Declaration: Wayne Morse of Oregon, George Aiken of Vermont, Edward Thye of Minnesota, Irving Ives of New York, Charles Tobey of New Hampshire, and Robert C. Hendrickson of New Jersey.[25]

In response to her speech, McCarthy referred to Smith and the six other Senators as "Snow White and the Six Dwarfs."[14] He removed her as a member of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, giving her seat to Senator Richard Nixon of California.[24] He also helped finance an unsuccessful primary challenger during Smith's re-election campaign in 1954.[13] Smith later observed, "If I am to be remembered in history, it will not be because of legislative accomplishments, but for an act I took as a legislator in the U.S. Senate when on June 1, 1950, I spoke ... in condemnation of McCarthyism, when the junior Senator from Wisconsin had the Senate paralyzed with fear that he would purge any Senator who disagreed with him."[22] She voted for McCarthy's censure in 1954.[10]

I am about ready to hurl if I have to read one more post about how great the Cheneys are.
They are evil personified.

Liz wants to be president and will say and do anything towards that goal.
Once elected, it would be a nightmare.

Cheney could very well be the Republican Margaret Chase Smith, if she wishes to step up to the moment. A speech in the House won't do it, though.

being disseminated by the Republican Party. I stand with Liz Cheney on this. I strongly disagree with her on most things, but this is such a huge and vital thing for all Americans to agree with that I'm going to put my past (like yesterday) abhorrence with her away for the time being. The current Republican party is the most dangerous enemy the US has ever faced. Our very freedom depends on fighting these fascist liars and more people from within the GOP need to stand up do what Liz Cheney is doing today.

She's doing what all the Republicans like Jeff Flake, who cut and run before speaking out, were too chickenshit to do.
Liz Cheney is awful but I'd rather be arguing against someone like her than the Matt Gaetzes and Trumps of their party and the quislings who let them drive headlong into pure authoritarianism and fascism.
