Can it really, really be finally happening? I think this may be it. I know, I know, don't get my hopes up, but this is actually quite fascinating to watch. What show! What a show! Pass the popcorn! Whoo hooo!!
I don't see how they reconcile, it looks like they are going to split into two parties, I can't believe it.

More than 100 influential Republicans plan to release a call for reforms within the GOP alongside a threat to form a new party if change isn't forthcoming, a person familiar with the effort said.
The statement, set to be released Thursday, involves a "Call for American Renewal," a credo that declares that it is imperative to "either reimagine a party dedicated to our founding ideals or else hasten the creation of such an alternative." The push will include 13 yet-to-be-revealed principles that the signatories want the GOP to embrace.

(2,977 posts)She can run for President on a new party ticket. She won't get the GOP nomination as long as Trump controls the GOP. If the GOP purges Trump there will be a new Trump party that splits off. If they don't get rid of Trump, well, read this:

(36,108 posts)Their faux debates and pronouncements about reform are just tools to get more media attention and money. It's the same GOP that was briefly packaged as a-little-more-weird under Trump

(6,021 posts)The party is now a cult, and no Republicans in power will end up splitting into another party. They will be pushed out like Liz Cheney or primaried and retired. They always want to change things from the inside - which never happens. For four years, we watched former officials talk on TV and write op-eds about how the party has lost its way and needs to change, needs to be more welcoming, more constituent-focused, blah, blah, blah.
The cult will continue to head further to the right and into delusion. I just hope it's wacky enough to convince enough people to vote against them.
BlueTsunami2018
(3,492 posts)And I use that term loosely. I dont consider Liz Cheney or Mitt Romney to have sane, grounded policy positions that would be beneficial to the country. They are merely not open traitors, the very lowest bar an elected official should have to clear.
Beetwasher.
(2,977 posts)Since the crazies are a significant chunk of the party. They Trumpers won't support Cheney faction and Cheney faction won't support Trump faction. They're fucked.
BlueTsunami2018
(3,492 posts)Theyre all in on the cult. Three or four people who are currently elected being against this nonsense doesnt mean anything. Theyre going to be gone in their next election. The Republicans are full bore for Тяцмр from the grassroots to the highest elected office they have. What a bunch of unelected people and old guard have to say means absolutely nothing to them. Theyre the deep state. Were in every bit as much danger from the loons as we were six months ago. Maybe even more. Theyre an open anti-democracy party with ten of millions of people who think thats the direction we should go in and they absolutely can win again.
Were making a big mistake if we think they cant or that theyre done as a national poltical force.
Beetwasher.
(2,977 posts)We are watching the ship sink. They are NOT all in on the cult. Cheney is proof positive of that. Just because most GOP CONGRESS is in the cult, does not mean most GOP VOTERS are in on the cult. They aren't, that is why Biden is so popular. This is how parties die. Read history. Cheneyites will not support Trumpers. Trumpers will not support Cheneyites. The party is in complete disarray and it's an unmitigated disaster and I don't get why people try to convince themselves otherwise. It's absurd.
BlueTsunami2018
(3,492 posts)The one thing you can count on from Republicans is that they fall in line. Sure, some might find Тяцмр repulsive but given the choice between him and any generic Democrat, theyre picking him. Just as they did with W, just as theyve always done. He was a hairsbreadth from winning again despite every horrific thing he did. When it comes down to it in the booth, theyre not voting Democratic. The Republican base is absolutely all in for Тяцмр and the nuts. Those are going to be the only people on the ballot for them to vote for in the general, and they will.
We going to need overwhelming turnout to beat them where we can. And some places it wont matter because of redrawing the districts and voter suppression laws.
Beetwasher.
(2,977 posts)That's the point. Their VOTERS are NOT all in for Trump. Look at the latest polling. The VOTERS are split down the middle in support for Trump and support for the GOP. The Republican base was not enough to beat Joe Biden and it won't be enough to win another election.
But if you want to live in fear of Trump, go ahead, but he's a loser who is destroying the GOP on his way to the dustbin.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/more-100-republican-former-officials-others-seek-reforms-threaten-new-n1267053
A recent NBC News poll found that 44 percent of Republicans said they support Trump more than the GOP, compared to 50 percent who said they support the GOP more than the former president.
That's not everyone falling in line for Trump, far from it.
BlueTsunami2018
(3,492 posts)Im in fear of a fascist party who has been playing a sixty year long game very well and are an election or two away from achieving their goal. All Тяцмр did was say the parts out loud that theyve been trying to pretend werent happening. And now that its out in the open, theyre pushing on with it. Theyre not walking it back.
You can whistle past the graveyard all you want but we are in mortal danger as a country and theyve stacked the deck in their favor.
Those numbers are great but theyre also meaningless. Theyd vote for him when the time came. Just as theyll vote for anyone with an R behind their name. They fall in line, they always have.

(4,461 posts)... are educated professionals. They mostly do not like the deplorable, racist, redneck knuckle draggers that have become the base of the party. They seem genuinely embarrassed.
Cheney is betting that there are more of them out there than there are Тяцмрers.
My guess is that their long term plan is to turn the right wing media machine against Тяцмр and his highest profile loyalists so that most of them go underground again. The principals in that media are not typical Тяцмрsters. They are old school republicans. They are waiting on something to come out on Тяцмр that will repel everyone except the true cult believers. Knowing Ole daddy Cheney, he may well already know whats coming and is advising Liz accordingly.
They will then try to rebuild the old party, accepting that it will take time and some losses to get there. But as long as they have Fox, etc..., they have a good chance of getting there.

(4,461 posts)... party is just theatre. They are threatening the cult in an effort to cow it. The cult politicians know that they cant win general elections with ONLY the Тяцмрters. They need the party apparatus. Once they realize that it might abandon them, they will fall in line (except, maybe, some of the craziest ones like MTG).
But they dont really want to split the party.
We will see, I guess, how that goes.
Beetwasher.
(2,977 posts)Cheney will never kow tow or back down from the Trumpists. Trump supported candidates will not be supported by Cheneyists, and Cheneyists will not support Trumpers. This is how parties die.

(4,461 posts)... fewer in number than they seem. But they are enough to flip their primaries in a good number of races. Thats what all these R politicians fear. Other than the handful of genuine psychos, the vast majority of the R politicians dont really believe ANY of the cult bullshit. They only vomit it up to avoid losing a primary.
If they start to understand that the true power in the party - the RW media and corporate $ - is abandoning Тяцмрism, they will all change their tune overnight. Guaranteed.
On the other hand, Тяцмрs numbers in the GE last year showed us that the cult members add a lot of votes to their column. We cant deny that. The R politicians see that too. Thats why theyre acting like idiots. But thats the media and the traditional R base plus the cult. I dont think that can be sustained for long (especially with corporate America beginning to bail on the cult), and thats what Cheney is betting on.
They have to carve it up. Corporate America (ie the $) is not likely to go with the cult. So it has to be excised. The only way to do that is to pull the media away from the cult, thus marginalizing it. Thats whats coming.

It's why I'm cutting the cord with all media. Because when the Media cannot "quit him/them", they live on, as strong as ever.
There might "rifts", there might be disputes, there might even be divisions, but at the end of the day, their love and adoration for fascists policies, and "leaders" rule the day in the Media and in Washington.
