"The Sheep Production & Marketing Grant Program seeks to develop solutions for practical problems on a national basis and address the needs of the entire sheep industry, while focusing on the measurable benefits for sheep producers, encouraging partnerships among other sheep industry organizations, and reducing duplication of effort among participating organizations.
In 2019, AMS awarded a 5-year grant for $1.9 million to the National Sheep Industry Improvement Center. Each year, the center will budget approximately $300,000 to support projects that accomplish one or more of the following objectives:
Strengthen and enhance the production and marketing of sheep and sheep products in the United States through the improvement of infrastructure, business, resource development and the development of innovative approaches to solve long term problems.
Provide leadership training and education to industry stakeholders.
Assist all segments of the industry in addressing sustainable production and marketing of sheep and sheep products.
Promote marketing of sheep and sheep products through an organized method that can measure tangible results.
Enhance the sheep industry by coordinating information exchange and seeking mutual understanding and marketing within the industry community."
Why is the government helping to develop marketing strategies for sheep based products? Shouldn't the market handle this?

(232 posts)Most prominent Republicans define Socialism as anything that's not pure, balls-to-the-wall naked Capitalism.
Truth be told, Capitalism is a pretty good system for technological development, at least. The reason we're all able to converse across an entire globe almost instantaneously is a direct result of Capitalism - people designing and building better mousetraps in the hopes of making some money. But like almost everything, absolute pure-play Capitalism, or any system, for that matter, can and most likely will have some very painful episodes and consequences if not judiciously monitored and wisely moderated, somehow.
Big and complex machines that have a tendency to become unstable are best used with regulators - control-systems of some sort. Markets and capitalism are such machines. You don't want those things flipping out, being under-damped and going rail-to-rail. Some may think operating those systems completely unfettered is how you maximize profits. But if the whole system wigs out and explodes or implodes due to ineffective regulation, pretty sure that the costs of that will far outweigh the slight constraint on profits that come with the stability of appropriate system control.
Fuck society as long as my company is maximizing profits is not a long-term winning strategy for the country.
