On the one hand, it could hurt us a bit if we lose some or most of the disaffected Republicans who came to the Dems and voted for Biden. If there is no offset on the Republican side, they could win.
On the other hand, this new alternative party could mostly splinter the old GOP to such a degree that we win.
How do you think this could go?
Personally, I think the latter will happen. The old GOP will splinter and we will win. But I can be convinced otherwise.

(130,825 posts)but what's GOOD is having someones speaking TRUTH, so we can begin to have rational discourse in the public arena.

(32,750 posts)Very small number, whether they stay together or split.
Polls show Bidens victory was driven by young voters, not disaffected qgop, so not sure. Personally I think it helps. The more damaged they are the less likely they will have an effective message going forward

(32,607 posts)Way more of them that Republicans. If the Repuglican splitters manage to pull in Independents that is a problem for Dems.

(16,894 posts)I fear he WILL be the chosen one! Now if there IS another third party, I feel that IS to our benefit! Can't see how it wouldn't be to our benefit really.

(16,843 posts)but I can't think of a better way to get the conservatives in the party to flake off. If the Trumpers run off the conservatives, I doubt they'll support the Keynesian Biden. If they nominate someone of their own, we have a very good chance.

(4,845 posts)I get we all hate Trump in here and never can understand his charm. But the fact is, Trump drew more voters to vote for him in 2020 than any other republicans ever did. We got endless "Trump drew out disinfected white voters to vote for the first time" media narrative back during his time in office. Those people aren't loyal to the republican party but to Trump. I think they would lose more voters if the top of the ticket isn't Trump (or someone Trump endorses). This is why the republican party have changed into the the party of Trump.
I have always held the view that Trump will be the most dangerous republican in 2024, and I haven't seen anything to change my view yet.

(16,843 posts)They liked his attitude or they liked the way he handled race relations or his perceived ability to run the economy well. Others voted for him because he was the Republican and some people are just going to vote Republican no matter what. I think that most Republicans now consider the GOP to be the party of Trump, but there's a minority that want Trump gone, and I don't think Trump can win if they don't vote for him. He is the most dangerous man in America today, but even some Republicans are starting to speak out against him. By 2024, there might be a lot more Republicans who decide they won't support him.

(12,645 posts)Like the "problem solvers" coalition, any GOP "moderation" requires peeling off conservative Dems to get the less cray-cray GOP policies, and to water down Democratic initiatives.
I doubt they can get a third party going; if they were really Never-Trum*red, the most they would do would to either abstain from voting or vote with the Dems.
But, they're probably too cowardly to leave the GOP herd and strike off on their own without some serious hand-holding.

(6,390 posts)The system is already set for two parties. They tried a third party with Perot, didn't quite work out. The advantage will be to those who manage to take the party, as the infrastructure is already there. But forcing a new party requires a lot of build up, and both Republicans and Democrats have insured that it's almost impossible to do.
And I'd like to see a center party, particular since the GOP of today is just the party of "no" and ideas that will at some point..come from dead people.
Problem is, we don't know how this war with nutcase Trump vs. Cheney, Bush, Reagan era ideas will go. They are literally shooting the very hero's they once worshipped. And all because they listened to AM Radio Bullshit. I said it once before and will say it again, Reagan could never be elected under the current GQP. And would probably change his affiliation back to Democrat given the insane ideas of today.
