That thing is experience.
This is not true of all of us. The former guy is old, and probably more than a little senile but since the former guy is a mindless sybaritic bigoted parasite who has not done a useful thing in his regrettable long life, he brought nothing to the table in terms of experience or capability.
One more thing...
The President is doing, as all wise (and decent) men and women do as the lives approach their ends, which is sharing the benefit of their experience with younger folks.
Our President is doing exactly that using the Mondale model with our Vice President.
Despite our many obvious failings of late, I still have faith in Americans to so the right thing when doing the wrong thing comes home to roost.

(33,512 posts)I forget - I'm old - who said it, but someone said, " Americans always do the right thing after exhausting all other options."
The Republicans are terrified and increasingly powerless and all their actions show it. Like the greater racists before them, they're stuck in the trenches outside Petersburg, waiting for a miracle that will not come, and are well on their way to their private Appomattox.

(60 posts)"..But only after they have exhausted every other possibility" - Winston Churchill. Not sure if he stole the line. One of New Zealand's Prime Ministers said " New Zealanders who leave for Australia raise the IQ of both countries". He stole that of one of his critics, who had swiped it from Will Rogers talking about Okies moving to California.
