'REALLY?' Pelosi Responds After GOP Rep Compares Capitol Riot to 'Tourist Visit'

‘REALLY?’ Pelosi Responds After GOP Rep Compares Capitol Riot to ‘Tourist Visit’
NOT HAVING IT

A day after a GOP House member likened the behavior of Trumpist rioters during the Jan. 6th insurrection to “a normal tourist visit,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi clapped back. “Really?” Pelosi told a Politico reporter. “Well, I don’t know a normal day around here where people are threatening to hang the vice president of the United States or shoot the speaker… I don’t consider that normal,” she said. At a House Oversight Committee hearing on Wednesday, Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) attempted to downplay the riot that resulted in five deaths and hundreds of arrests. “Let me be clear, there was no insurrection,” said Clyde, who described people behaving “in an orderly fashion” in TV coverage he’d seen of the event. “You would actually think it was a normal tourist visit,” Clyde said of the footage that shows rioters fighting with riot police, breaking into the Capitol building, and stealing the speaker of the House’s lectern.

Edit to add, Politicus:

https://www.politicususa.com/2021/05/13/pelosi-house-republicans-sick.html

Speaker Pelosi called House Republicans sick for claiming that the attack on the Capitol was a normal day.

Speaker Pelosi said:

Sadly yesterday, there was a hearing in the Committee on Government Reform that was quite appalling. Some of us made have been telling you about it. You have to see it for yourself because you cannot believe that a member of the committee said that what happened that day was a normal, orderly visit of people to the capitol. Really? Really? Well, I don’t know on a normal day around here when people are threatening to hang the Vice President Of The United States or disrupt or injure so many police officers. I don’t consider that normal.

Multiple people were killed, over 140 police officers shoot, and the attackers should hang the vice president. Normal? Yet, in a hearing yesterday, some house Republicans defended those actions, saying the rioters were orderly and acting similar to a normal tourist visit. They basically saw them and said, well, they were just walking through between the velvet ropes that are there to direct the tourist path. You have to see it because it was beyond denial.

It fell into the range of sick.

And that’s what we have to deal with when we are saying it is urgent for us to secure the Capitol. Why? It was just a normal tourist day. We have to strengthen our police force. Why? It was just a normal tourist day. And, we have to establish a commission for January 6th. Why? It was just a normal tourist day. So, the same denial that they have acted upon in terms of congresswoman Liz Cheney, the denial they have there. The denial about what happened that day. The denial for the need for more security to make sure it doesn’t happen again and the denial of refining the truth is what we have to deal with. And we will find the truth, and we are hoping we can do so in the most bipartisan way possible. I think that that’s essential.

They really seem to think their viewers include a lot of confused people who don't know what to think because they're hitting the lies again and again and again. So maybe they do.

I am sure that Clyde, like many of his constituents gets his "news" from Fox, OANN, and Newsmax, along with other various and sordid right wing propaganda outlets. I am sure that the "videos" they saw are different from the actual footage of the Insurrection that much of the public saw.

I am wondering why some Democratic member of the committee didn't use their time to pull up videos and confront the idiot Clyde with the footage and straight up question him. "Is this NORMAL to you?" Show the footage of the Insurrectionists beating cops, "Is this a tourist day to you?" Show the insurrectionist woman getting shot with the Capital guys barricaded with guns drawn, "That is what you consider 'behaving peacefully'?"

I just don't believe they'd be boring and irritating aware viewers with all this emphatic, practically desk slapping repetition if they didn't believe there were others they had to reach. Polls say many don't know what to think, and my guess is RW lies are influencing some of those who do watch CNN and MSNBC, at least sometimes.

As for the other,...?

it's been a huge weapon used for decades to destroy people's confidence in what they know, in our ability to do what we say we will, that there's anything good to vote for. Every predatory act by the right and every adverse event are accompanied by a barrage of propaganda claiming the Democrats did it.

A main goal isn't to turn people who prefer CNN if they watch anything into conservative voters but to discourage them from voting at all. 100 million in 2016, 80 million in 2020.

Just look at all the people who've believed that Democrats serve business just as the Republicans did, "Democrats don't care about people like me," "corrupt corporatists": different poisons for each vulnerability.

Confusion. Ultimately disaffection, disengagement, and protective indifference.

How on earth would you learn to yell at CNN and MSNBC unless you were getting your "news" from Fox or some other right wing source. I have a brother in law who has the same reaction to the "liberal media". He claims that he consumes media from "all over" but he only ever posts information from right wing outlets...go figure.

There has been a divide in the US along political and ideological lines for quite awhile but prior to the 90's everyone got their news from the same sources, THEN had their spin. Now, people just go where their biases lie, or go hate watch other outlets to prove how horrible they are.

If violence, death threats, and property damage are "normal" touristy things to Clyde, that is.

Course, he could be a liar.

Let's go with liar.

But check on his home life anyway.

You never know. He could be both a liar and someone who abuses his family and calls that "normal".

Clyde opened a gun shop, Clyde Armory, Inc., which began as a hobby business out of his garage in 1991. He obtained commercial real estate for the store in 1999, and moved from the 2,900-square-foot (270 m2) building to a custom-built 12,400-square-foot (1,150 m2) edifice based on a historical armory in 2010.[3] Clyde opened a second location in Warner Robins, Georgia in 2014. He grew the business to $12 million annually in sales and 25 employees.[6] In 2013, he was subject to a civil asset forfeiture of $940,000 by the Internal Revenue Service. It was later reversed, refunding him $900,000.[4]

Following the civil asset forfeiture, Clyde advocated reform in testimony before the United States House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight.[8] In 2019, Congress passed and President Donald Trump signed the Taxpayer First Act (H.R. 3151), which includes the Clyde-Hirsch-Sowers RESPECT Act. The law limits what funds the IRS can seize.[9]

It was a historic and singular teaching opportunity that would make clear what the riot and insurrection were all about, who ordered the police stand-down, who prevented the National Guard from arriving, who lied about it, and who is to blame.

For some reason, we passed and moved on.

Now the GOP plays dummy-up and the country slides further apart.

Thanks, Putin.

Well mostly....this cretin is either lying or terminally stupid or both.

Unbelievable, this joke and MTG harassing AOC. And Damn them for making us praise Liz Cheney for something.

For really the first time in my life I fear we are in danger of losing our democracy. This is an all hands on deck moment we are in a fight for survival. Talking to you Joe Mansion and Kirsten S.

The good news is they are alienating non crazy Republicans and their voting restrictions may harm them as much or more since a lot of their base is rural.
