Senate Republicans are expressing dismay, publicly and privately, over the House GOP's vote to remove Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) from leadership, which some GOP lawmakers see as a worrisome sign of former President Trump's continued grip on the party.
It's not lost on them that their own leader, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), has also dismissed Trump's claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election as "repeated election lies" and they themselves are under pressure from Trump to find a new leader.
Many GOP senators, however, are keeping quiet about their concerns and would prefer to talk about other subjects, namely what they view as President Biden's far-too-costly infrastructure agenda and plan to raise taxes on corporations.
It's possible that Cheney, who had eyed a run for Senate in 2013 and again in 2019, was a member of the Senate GOP leadership, she wouldn't have been deposed.

Don't think Lindsey Graham is dismayed.

(82,849 posts)Sen. Collins made this bold statement:
"I have said that I believe Liz Cheney is an honorable, courageous individual who did what she thinks is right, but it's up to the House to choose its own leaders, it's not up to senators," she said.
So, she's dismayed, which tells us where the headline came from. Not sure if that's more or less intense than concerned. I like how The Hill's headline for this story lines up so badly with the actual substance of the report. The only Senate Republican quoted as saying that this episode is actually bad for the party is not identified. All the rest seem to come down on the side of "that's the House's business, not ours." And none of them were asked (apparently) or volunteered an opinion about whether The Big Lie is a lie.

(32,634 posts)She represents the District of Wyoming, and it's called an "at-large district."
The state of Wyoming has a population of 576,851 - and that's for the ENTIRE state. Meanwhile there are 31 cities in the United States that have populations that are larger - some are much larger - and most are voting heavily Democratic. Her authority and seniority are miniature compared to the BLUE CITIES of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, etc.
If she were to run for a Senate seat in Wyoming, and win, she would have even more authority and she'd be even more outsized by our BLUE STATE populations. It's insane how much power we are ceding to her, and she doesn't deserve any of it.

It reminds me of a scene in Schindler's List when a Jewish woman architect tells Nazi officer Amon Goeth that there's a problem with a building's foundation and it has to be redone. First he shoots her, then he gives the order to redo the foundation.
