The military has always supported the Republican Party

Last edited Thu May 13, 2021, 08:55 PM - Edit history (1)

Surprised that Democrats are perplexed that a Marine Major is arrested in the January 6th coup attempt. I was in basic training in the Fall of 1972. In the middle of training we were given the "morning off from running to and from the range" to have a training in an auditorium. We are all happy to be in air conditioning. On the stage, a Drill Instructor (DI) we had never seen told us that we would be receiving ballots to vote in the election. That we should vote for Nixon because he would increase our pay and supported a strong defense. Several of our DI's also spoke about the evils of Democrats. I was a college grad so I was very offended by this crap. It was interesting to me as a looked around the room that no officers were present. It was obvious that the Army knew this was illegal under the UCMJ and the officers were told to stay away to give deniability in the event this blew up. Please. The military knows exactly what is going on here.

1. 1 of how many?

Not saying that there is no issue with recruits, but a single major caught up in the Insurrection is no cause to panic.

2. One basic training command indoctrinating its troops to support Republicans IS a cause of concern.

Prove to me it has stopped.

3. Ya know,

I went through basic in '64 and spent 35 years in the Corps and what you say is bullshit.

4. I was in the military and was never pressured to vote in a particular way

I don't think providing one personal example supports your statement

5. Me too Skittles,

and not once was I ever pressured on who to vote for, although in '64, I was too young to vote as the voting age was still 21.

Personally, I think that if this really did happen to OP, then it was an isolated case.

9. I was in the military also

and not once, nor do I know of anyone who was pressured to vote for a certain candidate.

11. In my 28 years, I never heard of any attempt to pressure or even encourage how or whether to vote.

I'm not questioning your experience. I am suggesting it was an isolated incident.
