"KEEP WEARING THE MASKWe card-carrying epidemiologists (with formal doctorate in epidemiology) know what we are talking about. Vast majority of 700+ epidemiologists surveyed says we would keep wearing masks for 1 year or longer." (Link to NYT article)

(33,424 posts)They have nothing to do with one on one medicine. Epidemiologists look at statistics to determine the routes of disease.

(1,107 posts)Virologists and immunologists also generally have nothing to do with one on one medicine. The professionals who work one on one with the public depend on the research done by people in those professions to make good decisions as to treat and advise their patients.
By the way your explanation of what Epidemiologists is incomplete, they also are "The cornerstone of public health, and shapes policy decisions and evidence-based practice by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare."
If my doctor tells me that he's not going to follow the advice of Epidemiologists I'll look for another doctor.
former9thward
(33,424 posts)over infectious disease specialists at the CDC? I want a doctor to follow the science, not "surveys" done by a journalist whose last science course was in high school.
Maybe the epidemiologists should publish a peer reviewed article on the subject like real scientists do.

(23,218 posts)Since you have such a lack of understanding of who plays what role in the practices of evidence based medicine. I'll just state the facts as a response to your nonsense.
Infectious disease physicians and epidemiologists are closely related, but they are not the same. Infectious disease doctors specialize in infectious disease medicine, which is a subspecialty of internal medicine. These physicians treat patients and help prevent, diagnose and treat diseases caused by a variety of pathogens, including; bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Most infectious disease specialists have additional knowledge in the areas of immunology, epidemiology and infection control.
They use their knowledge of epidemiology and clinical syndromes to make decisions about managing patients. This knowledge often saves lives because treatments can be started before patients become deathly ill. Often the infectious disease specialist is the first to notify the epidemiologist that a new disease is spreading in a community.
The role of an epidemiologist is a bit different. Some epidemiologists are also infectious disease medical doctors, while many epidemiologists have doctors of public health degrees and work outside of a clinical setting. Epidemiologists look at the big picture, using outbreak investigation methods and extremely large amounts of data to isolate the root cause of a disease. They are crucial in guiding communities to effective disease prevention. When it comes to epidemiology, it is the community thats being "treated" or "studied" to reduce the total outbreaks of illness.
Epidemiology is the study of the cause and distribution of diseases and health conditions in specific populations. Epidemiologists use scientifically based, systematic data analysis to determine what is causing health problems within a studied community or region.
Infectious disease epidemiology includes the study of diseases such as COVID-19, Ebola, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, food-borne illness and diarrheal pathogens, among others. It also includes research related to the development and evaluation of vaccines. Epidemiologists focus their efforts on how to stop it from spreading and prevent another outbreak or incident of the disease.
Both infectious disease physicians and epidemiologist are scientists, because they both are guided by the scientific method in the jobs they perform. Infectious disease physicians utilize the results of the data provided by epidemiology to treat individual patients in accordance to a method that will satisfy the needs of the overall community. For instance, a family medicine doctor would treat a patient with XR confirmed aspiration pneumonia with a specific type, dose and duration of oral antibiotics. This is not because he knows exactly the antibiotic will function and how long it will take to effectively eliminate the bacteria. The reason is because others have performed the studies to provide the physician with the best course of treatment. A duration too short, will produce antibiotic resistant bacteria strains, and will further complicate the patients outcome. These are from rigorous peer reviewed cohort studies, conducted and published by epidemiologists and pharmacologists.

Trying to avoid any and all causes of sickness for otherwise healthy people isn't necessary and can set you up for problems later. A young healthy person needs to be exposed to common bugs to develop a healthy functioning immune system.

(58,785 posts)We'll hear it from press interviewing experts before any announcements from our own government.
However, virtually certainly their information will come from virologists in whatever nations are involved who've been working with CDC teams on the scene and in Atlanta to determine what they have.
For all whose not wanting to be mistaken for depraved pod people and giving them cover as if they've won something, how about masking when it feels best and the rest of the time wearing a nice, big pin instead? It'd be a lot more comfortable over the summer and tell people you're safe to be around.

Redbubble.com has a pin I like because of its pointedly pro-science message that people have long accepted and been grateful for, but I can't post its picture.

Every time they say "oh, deaths have dropped slightly, you can stop masking here and there" the usual idiots declare "CDC sez pandemic over!!" and assert their "right" to cough up phlegm on the bus again.

I'm also going to watch to see if there's an increase in rates of infections among the vaccinated. The fact that people who are more likely to get vaccinated are also more likely to comply with mask mandates could have some sort of impact on numbers.

(My humble opinion only)
(Yes, I'll still wear a mask sometimes... in public places where I don't know if most people are vaccinated, of course. Crowded places. When traveling. Of course. But not in the places where the CDC says it's okay to drop them. And I'll avoid unvaccinated people, even my SIL and brother who won't get vaccinated.)

(6,319 posts)many surveys reveal that vaccine hesitant will get a vaccine if required. This is as close as you can get short of mandating vaccination when employers require all unvaccinated staff to wear masks indefinitely. You bet we will see vaccination rates increase. We need to continue momentum and excitement around vaccination. What we need is a quick and reliable way to verify vaccination status while still protecting privacy.

But to make the point that 30% of Americans will never get vaccinated. And they will continue to get sick and die.
But so far the data is pretty clear that if vaccinated you have a just under 1 in a million chance of dying from Covid. And 100 million is a pretty big subject group.

(20,277 posts)Pseudo DU experts who think they have some special insight trying to play the big role here are not taken seriously by me. I also dont blindly trust in govt. But Im not anti govt either, which has been in style here in recent days with regard to the CDC.
Masks will be worn in scenarios where I deem them necessary. I expect little will change for me with mask wearing other then when at a friends home, who is also vaccinated, I will no longer wear one. In crowded public settings that I cant avoid, I will continue to wear one.
