some people get twisted about the shape of the letters and they hear shouting in their head, but the internet itself is silent, there's no shouting at all. It's just text.

May 2021

If shouting in post headings becomes the norm, then the majority of posts will shout and the culture here would become more contentious and toxic.

It's obvious, I've seen it happen, and I've seen other places where it has been frowned on like DU and they have more harmonious cultures like DU.

Ultimately, headlines and posts at DU depend on their content, not the largeness of the text. All capitals is a sign of ego leaking through and saying "I'M MORE IMPORTANT".

What part of the text of this post did you read first?

For those it bothers, there should be a script or theme that uncaps the offendingly shaped letters. People should practice reading all caps in the quietest sotto voce internal voice they can muster.

It's also been found that people with dyslexia have difficulty with all caps -

All caps and dyslexia

For people with dyslexia, the ability to read and understand text can be affected by the way in which text has been written and produced. ... Using all capital letters can make it harder to read, and it can also appear that you are shouting at the reader.

It was easy to read, easy on the eyes and no shouting perceived. In short, not even the slightest problem with readability. Sure, if you're dyslexic, that's a whole other kettle of fish, but we're just talking caps here.

I use all caps on rare occasions generally in the body of my posts, only when I want to emphasize an emotional point.

However, even then I question the necessity and will often edit.

I trash headlines in all caps with rare exceptions. The exception would be of a real national emergency or crises.

I'll also give exception to the rule if and when the moment the Psychopathic Mob Criminal exiled in Florida and Bedminister is arrested and behind bars. I'll give all caps on that one.

So it's annoying in that way too.

When we read, we don’t actually look at every letter in a sentence, but actually the shapes of the words. When text is in All Caps, the height of every letter is identical making every word an even rectangular shape, forcing us to read letter-by-letter, reducing our reading speed (by 10%) . . . We use the tops of the letters to help us recognize the shapes of the words more than the bottoms, and when written in "Sentence case", that is the first word with a capital letter then all other words in lower case, this enables the eye to easily flow from one word to the next.
