An Israeli airstrike on Saturday demolished a Gaza City high-rise building that housed journalists from the Associated Press, Al Jazeera and other news outlets.
About an hour before, a resident of the 12-story building received a call, purportedly from the Israeli military, warning of an impending attack but giving no explanation for why the building was being targeted.
Journalists described a mad scramble to collect equipment and evacuate the building. Several networks, including Al Jazeera, then showed the building collapsing on live TV.

One of Associated Press Gaza correspondents, Fares Akram, tweeted that he had been watching from afar and hoping the army would not go through with its threat.
And now bombs could fall on our office, he wrote. We ran down the stairs from the 11th floor and now looking at the building from afar, praying Israeli army would eventually retract.
The Israeli Air Force later claimed, without evidence, that the building contained military assets belonging to the intelligence offices of the Hamas terror organization. But Al Jazeera bluntly tweeted: Targeting journalists is a war crime.

(27,074 posts)The NYT and other media sent out alerts about it. But they hadn't entered Gaza -- they just wanted Hamas to think they had. Using the press as a weapon.

(15,325 posts)Hamas is Iran.
Are they playing the 2 sides?
Because there is a 3rd culprit here & being it is IRAN, then what is THEIR endgame in this ongoing conflict of the ages.
Just asking since this story goes back so far there seems to be no beginning nor ending.
🙁

(28,452 posts)They targeted their building after they warned them to leave immediately, which they did. It is certainly believable that assets were housed there for the exact reason that the building couldnt be destroyed: Hamas has been using civilian shields for decades.

(15,325 posts)To get even the gist of today's LBnews, one really needs to know who the players are & what their purpose is.
I cannot trust that HAMAS (IRAN) isn't in this for their own unscrupulous reasons.

(2,868 posts)You're making a mistake believing the fascist Likud propaganda.
In July of 2014, as the fascist Likud was engaged in a massive bombing campaign in Gaza, they released and widely promulgated a video they had labeled "Hamas using children as human shields". The video showed a man firing a mortar, and behind him was a group of small children huddled with an older man. Except the video was documented as being from the war in Syria, in the past.
Fascists, as documented by both Donnie and the Likud, lie like normal people breathe.

(15,458 posts)If Hamas was the party elected in the Gaza Strip as the government, than any organization, any person being paid by that government can be by default, a Hamas asset.
It's a problem acknowledged by a few Palestinians and Lebanese people I have spoken to over the years. Both Hamas and Hezbollah, while Iranian proxies provide both "hard" ( "protection"/military/police ) and "soft" ( community services/NGO support/schools/health support ) influence to those areas they are organized. Both groups have a significant civilian presence that are ignored because of rockets and belligerence of the armed terrorist/freedom fighter wing of the organizations.
So a community doctor who is able to pay for his office, nurse and medical supplies because of a nebulous affiliation with Hamas/Iran is just as much a target for an air-strike as a couple dead-enders in an abandoned schoolyard with a couple tripod rocket launchers. Basically, almost half the male Palestinian population on the West Bank and Gaza over the age of 12 can be considered Hamas members, and any small business or clinic can be considered a Hamas asset.
That is the tragedy of the Palestinians (and Lebanese) Syria and Jordan view them both as break-off tribal territories and would only help them if they came back to the fold, as it were. The rich Wahabbi Arab nations (Saudi, UAE) view them as poor apostates and undeserving of help until they convert, Egypt won't help Gaza unless it agreed to be part of Egypt, and of course Israel won't accept them as full citizens because they won't submit to giving up their own heritage and participating in the Knessit/Zionist vision of the Jewish Homeland.
So they fight against what they see as injustice. And Israel fights back -harder, with better technology. And Iran subsidizes Hamas and Hezbollah, because of various political grievances between Iran and Israel from decades past that neither country can let go of.
It's a horrible, difficult situation.
And it's colored by resentment and hubris on all sides.
But as to how this might end? Well, it doesn't look good at all for the increasingly smaller clusters of Palestinian civilians who just want to run their shops and farm their ancestral farms like their great-great-grandparents did, back in the days when the native Jews, Arabs, and Christian were pretty much united against the British, French, or. Ottoman rule.
