General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI believe that this is a fair question:
For the sake of argument, suppose the shoe were on the other foot and it was a radical left group in large numbers which assaulted the US Capitol. Now in this imaginary scenario, the Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the presidency just as they did relatively recently, and felt that they had been threatened by this mob.
With the Republicans in the majority in the House and Senate, is there any question that a commission would have been appointed immediately and would have full subpoena power and would be Holding hearings seven days a week with press conferences four times a day excoriating Democrats and the Left?
In my opinion, by 10th of January, this commission would be in the process of jailing hundreds of people who were seen in the District of Columbia in any capacity. In addition, they would be charging insider complicity and attempting to expel House and Senate Democrats and certainly would be pursuing Federal warrants against anyone who spoke out even vaguely praising the protesters/revolutionaries.
As with the Gulf War and the ensuing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, most of America by the end of the re-education process would have jumped on the bandwagon and demanded the resignations of all Democratic Congress people who did not support these individuals who were members of the commission. The Republicans would use this excuse to have a Constitutional Convention and rewrite the document in toto.
This is the difference between them and us.

It should blatantly appear to everyone in this nation that these "New" Republicans will stop at nothing to succeed. Period.....
It is really really really hard to imagine that we haven't reached the point of no return.
I can't help wonder if the 74+ Million Trump Humpers have children or grand children, or if they are truly SO selfish that they don't care about them.......
They are still, one millimeter away from "installing" a Corporate Fascist Tyranny............

(20,245 posts)They appear to practice the strikingly opposite of virtuous behaviour as put forth in Scripture. Such as selflessness, humility, lovingkindness, etc.
I myself sense that there is a spiritual warfare element in this antagonism we experience presently.
Holy Scripture says something about "whitewashed tombs of dead men's bones."
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean."

(9,664 posts)as you describe - or very close to. For years, we've seen how they react to any opportunity for political advantage over Democrats. And it is all made worse by having the MSM carrying Reep water and blowing their horns.

(5,126 posts)There would have been no problem. Every one of the persons who tried to breech the Capitol doorways would have been shot down. Every person outside the doors would probably have been as well. This was an attack on our government, and thanks to rethug collusion and interference, good people were hurt and killed. However, only one of the assailants was killed for their actions. You can jail all of the rest of them (and some of them might learn a lesson due to their privilege being temporarily removed) but without any real consequences, I am not sanguine about any lessons being learned. I am not saying we should convene a convention, I am saying those who did this need to be PUNISHED, not (punished).

(8,817 posts)I think the Dems are about to witness the full effect of the Republican's obsession with packing the appellate courts with Federalist recommended Republican Judges .........The Republicans have been doing this for decades, and Mitch/Trump accelerated it massively in the past four years.

(9,721 posts)doing what the real insurrectionist did, he would have been impeached and then prosecuted so fast we wouldnt have been able to keep up.

(4,438 posts)the Capitol days before at the onset of discovering the threats. But you're definitely right. The rethugs would have been squawking nonstop in the media about the sorry loser, violent criminal, unpatriotic dems. And any dem who went along with it would have been driven out of Congress pronto and any potential insurrectionists thrown in jail immediately.

(239 posts)But I would also add if the situation were reversed that the Republicans would have declared martial law under the pretense that America was in grave danger by the "radical Left" and that martial law would continue until we figure out "What's going on?" as Trump would say. Draconian laws would be implemented and everyone even slightly sympathetic to the protesters would be demonized or jailed.
Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson would be raving every night about how we must do everything in our power to keep "the Marxists" from taking over and that Trump's word is law and must never be questioned. They would applaud the inevitable mass arrests and loss of our freedoms under the guise of "law and order". Crazy militia types--with the approval of the police-- would be roaming the streets looking for "traitors". It would be a fascist nightmare!
As you said, those who tried to storm the Capital would be either dead or in prison. The Capital would NOT have been breached! Law enforcement would not have given them the kid gloves treatment the MAGA mob got. They would have been met with live ammo and swinging batons to the head! And those that escaped would be quickly rounded up and thrown in jail. Those who decried the police over-reaction would be denounced as 5th Columnists and accused of treason.
But since the rioters were right-wingers they were allowed to invade the Capital and to leave freely. (Even after they busted the place up, stole things and smeared feces in the walls.) Some even took selfies with the cops! Republican politicians who aided and abetted them are still in office. Nothing will happen to them because the GOP "leadership" will block any justice coming their way. This is life in America now. If you are white and reactionary you can get away with anything. Even an attempted coup! But if you are liberal and/or a POC expect the book to be thrown at you if you even give someone a dirty look! It's disgusting.

(9,981 posts)She said that Democrats need to fight like Republicans. We dont need to lie and cheat the way they do, but were a bit too polite at times. Can you imagine any Democrat ever telling a lie like the one this week where reprehensible Rep. Clyde said the attack just looked like a normal tourist visit. Republicans use scorched earth tactics and vivid rhetoric full of racism, grossly exaggerated claims about things like socialism, and lies about Democrats murdering babies and training children to be LGBTQ while Democrats far too often deliver a treatise on a topic that takes 10 minutes to determine the point being made. I appreciate the treatise, but Im a Democrat and I like knowing the thoughts behind and ideas behind a policy. Far too many people, though, want the quick hit of information and they make up their minds on 30 seconds of lies. Democrats dont need to stoop to the Republican level of utter falsehoods, but they do need succinct messages.

(14,897 posts)Great Question. The Central Question, really.
Trump was in Putins pocket.
No problem for GOP, treason.
No Democratic President has ever been in Putins pocket, but if there were, he or she would be toasted and impeached.
Not the other foot, though, for GOP.
Trump worked to overturn election by ordering mob to attack Congress and stop electoral college vote.
No problem for GOP, treason.
No Democratic President has ever ordered a mob to attack Congress and overturn an election, but if there were, he or she would be toasted and impeached.
Not the other foot, though, for GOP.
Not seeing any mention of this hypocrisy by Democratic leadership on prime time TV?
Well, tradition.

(4,793 posts)How would I/we have felt if this had happened in 2016 with the rioters being the left-wing. I would like to say I would think this was going too far and there was no evidence of fraud, and distance myself. But in the heat of that loss, would I? I hope so, but not positive.
