GOP leaders look to curtail ballot initiatives after red state voters opt for legal weed, expanded Medicaid

Meanwhile, a ballot initiative expanding Medicaid was rejected by Missouri Gov. Mike Parson last week after that state's GOP-controlled Legislature failed to provide funding for the program in the budget. In August, 53 percent of Missouri voters voted yes on Amendment 2, which would have provided health insurance to 230,000 low-income residents and help out struggling rural hospitals.

On Thursday, Parson — who had opposed the initiative — said he would not be expanding the program due to its costs not being covered. Amendment 2 did not specify where funding for the new coverage would come from, and the Legislature opted not to provide it, crippling the expansion.

“Without a revenue source or funding authority from the General Assembly, we are unable to proceed with the expansion at this time and must withdraw our State Plan Amendments to ensure Missouri’s existing MO HealthNet program remains solvent,” Parson said on Thursday.

2. The people have spoken

Americans want medicaid expansion. They want prohibition on weed lifted. The GOP is stuck in the reefer madness 40s peddling bullshit.

Americans want higher wages. Americans want the things in the American Rescue Plan and the Infrastructure Modernization plan.

GOP offers The Big Lie on top of a thousand points of obstructionist bloviation against what most people support. When the child credit payments hit, and federal contracts pay higher minimum wages, and the economy opens up, people won't vote for sedition, repression and autocracy. I don't see it. The Conventional wisdom about midterms is wrong. The backlash against the on going Fraudit and the onset of trials will isolate Republicans, and independents aren't voting for that.

3. Florida voted to restore voting rights to criminals done with their sentences

DeSantis and the Florida lege utterly stiff-armed the will of the people, and threw up roadblock after roadblock to people trying to reclaim their voting rights. One of the first hurdles was to claim that the sentence was completely served until people had paid off their fines, court costs, and incarceration fees. Then, of course, the ex-convicts couldn't get a straight answer out of the various agencies about how much they owed, to which agencies they were owed, but until they paid up they couldn't vote.

Did Florida Republicans pay a price for that? Not so far.
