(8,019 posts)Of some of those sayings because of how closely they parallel current events.
So I went looking for the Grant quote. I found that it was embedded in a speech Grant gave in Des Moines, IA on September 29, 1875. Not to worry.

(15,751 posts)'the Mother's favorite . . . heart of a lion', haunt me to this day. [The second was William James, 'the greatest discovery of our generation . . . '.].
Both great quotes, obvious that both authors said something like that many times. However, no one I know of, ever found the definitive, precise speech, in letters or elsewhere. [The James quote I have on my wall, I photo copied out of a book, as a chapter introduction without a cite. A friend, a star university professor, who taught James as a subject, went nuts looking for it.
So thanks again for your diligence.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
