(13,006 posts)She asked how much was spent on exec compensation from 2013 to 2018, he answered about $60 million a year, and she replied "try 334 {million} on for size," which implied his figure was way off... but $60 mill a year over 6 years is 360 million, so he actually was close, and in fact over-estimated.
But yeah, she did a good job overall.
blm
(114,658 posts)Perhaps she was saying the actual compensation totaled $334m per year.

(13,006 posts)...she knew the answers she was going to put up before she presented the questions, so they should certainly have been the correct answers for the questions as asked... and she seems the kind of person to get that stuff right. I think she just knew what she wanted to present and wasn't necessarily paying a whole lot of attention to how the guy answered, he was just there to be her straight man. Besides, when the guy didn't know a figure, he said he didn't know. Any time he gave a figure, it was roughly correct. He wasn't guessing, he knew the right answer, and he gave it, an average of somewhere around 60 mill/yr.

(41,634 posts)I don't feel a bit sorry for that guy. He's Martin Shkreli in a Brooks Brothers suit. That guy didn't get caught the way Shkreli did, but he's just as bad. The Big Pharmas are all like this, and it's one of the main reasons why our healthcare costs and medical insurance are so high in the US.
Thank you Katie Porter!

(17,557 posts)So you're saying we should go the "socialism" route just because they're making gazillions in our wonderful 'health-care' system?
And the sad thing is: Did anybody anywhere even hear that round of questioning, or were our "Representatives" checking their phones to see if their stocks "took a hit" because of that mean, nasty lady........

(41,634 posts)I don't know anything other than this tweet from Katie Porter.
But it seems to me, the guy answering her questions has a different background setting that's not the Congressional hearing room. She might have had the camera on her, and then the guy answered through the internet, like a zoom meeting.
Does anyone know?

I would not want to be the guy sent to her committee ...but then again I still have a soul so I don't work at the corporate office for a bug pharma company

He broke in as Dianne Feinsteins assistant and is straight from her mold.
I'm not expecting him to go out on a limb for anyone or challenge the system.
Just like her.
Porter is a protege of Elizabeth Warren.
She's a pitbull politician taking the fight to the power brokers, just like her.
I prefer those types instead of the corporate compromised politicians in our party right now.
But if you can tell me anything he has done in the last few months that has helped in our battles with the GOP and corporate fraudsters like Porter please let me know.

(32,988 posts)AOC for President!
Joe Biden has not even completed six months of his term and anyone, no matter how inexperienced, who stands up to a republican should be President! I get very tired of all the oohing and aaahing by DU members.
You will notice that Warren was not the nominee. She was not the person who won the election. I could care less who Warren mentored.
If you prefer the pit bull types, well good for you. They definitely have their place in the party. So do the experienced politicians. Like Padilla. Like Biden.
If Porter has been appointed, what then? A special election? More drama? We nearly lost the House as it is. We may lose it yet in 2022. Porter is needed right where she is. I like her there.
What has Padilla done in the last few months? He has voted with the Democrats. He has done his job. Not everyone has to be a pit bull.
Save your snark for the republicans.

The way she drills in on the facts is just breath-taking. It puts everything in perspective and certainly silences the BS artists.

And the white board - that is priceless!

What we do not see are the rest of the committee - the people that will ultimately allow things to continue the way they are.

(132,217 posts)OCD and depression; marajuana: pain, sleep, upset stomach, glaucoma, etc., off the legal market. Psychadelic mushrooms grow everywhere in the world and were used by humans everywhere for 100,000 years. We are only now untipping that boat. Big pharma got a great canadian vaccine maker to go away. So we could not make our own covid vaccine. Some herbals really work. Ginger is good for sore stomachs, etc... When that became undenyable pharmaceutical companies started selling it. The point is their only point is profit. We should never expect them to think properly of anything else with any morals or talent and not let them make any other decisions for our countries. They should be heavily regulated. Citizen's United should be overturned.

(7,920 posts)But I didn't watch that.
It would bring up a question in my mind that I can't find an answer to.
(Well, I can, but the answer isn't pretty.)
When this idea of profit before concern for a person's health first popped up in the US, why wasn't it squashed at conception?
It has in every other country. Health care, everywhere else, is a human right, and it needs to be accessible and affordable. And governments have made it so.
Except in the US.
I live in a 'socialist' country.
I can predict my future medical expenses. A trip in an ambulance will cost me, and so will a trip to a dentist.
Nothing else.
And no, we don't pay for any medical insurance.
Wife had treatment for lung cancer with follow up scans. Bills? What bills? Not getting any, not expecting any.
Paying bonuses to top execs is a clear sign the US health system is geared towards profits, and not so much helping sick patients.
Sad!
Katie has done her homework and pointed out the problem.
But she is not the first to do so. It's not news.
Question now should be: What are you going to do about it?
