Two were turned in by anonymous tipsters.
Another defendant from Western New York was identified when his photo matched a mugshot from an earlier arrest.
And their faces appeared in videos posted to Facebook or YouTube or on surveillance cameras and police bodycams that are being used as evidence against them, according to court documents. On Tuesday and Wednesday, federal authorities arrested five people in Western New York for their alleged participation in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection in Washington D.C.
Authorities investigating the Jan. 6th insurrection at the Capitol say two extremist groups that traveled to Washington along with thousands of other Trump supporters weren't whipped into an impulsive frenzy by President Donald Trump that day.
The people arrested Wednesday in the Buffalo area were William Michael Sywak, 45, of Hamburg, and his son William Jason Sywak, 27, of Arcade; Traci Sunstrum, 44, of Amherst; and John Juran, 51, of Williamsville. Daniel Warmus of Alden, who is accused of bragging at a dentist's office about breaching the Capitol building and smoking marijuana while inside, was arrested Tuesday.
All five are facing federal misdemeanor charges.

(7,947 posts)I keep thinking of that Marine major. His career is shot, and he could lose his pension and get a dishonorable discharge.
And for Trump!

(8,346 posts)I keep thinking of that Marine major. His career is shot, and he SHOULD lose his pension and get a dishonorable discharge. He was involved in an insurrection against the United States, he violated the Constitution that he swore an oath to protect and defend.
Fuck him, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. He knows better and still decided to play stupid games.

(2,697 posts)The Marines may sever him from the service and leave him pensionless. Or they may simply demote him to private and let him serve out his time if he so chooses. But, of course, with a dose of civilian prison time facing him, the Corps may not have that option --- even if it wanted to consider it, which I doubt.
And, as pertains to the crimes he knowingly and willingly committed on January 6, 2021, let me rephrase your summing up: "To play stupid and treasonous games, you will be treated as a stupid traitor.
I am still more than a little amazed at the mans lack of awareness. A Major and he didnt realize that treason has consequences!

(7,526 posts)Enlisted members can be reduced in rank and/or kicked out using a (increasing in severity) Other Than Honorable, Bad Conduct, or Dishonorable Discharge.
Officers can not be reduced in rank, and can be Dismissed instead of being kicked out with one of the three discharges above. Dismissal is basically equivalent to Dishonorable Discharge in terms of repercussions. That said, as a rule of thumb someone must serve three years honorably in a rank to retire in that rank.

(2,697 posts)I had labored in the misbelief that the military relieved officers of their commissions and reduced them in rank to E-1 if their crimes were sufficient to require imprisonment.

No pension needed when ya dead. South Carolina just reinstated the firing squad. Lots of bases in SC. Great place for a trial and penalty.

(32,745 posts)The feds have videos and photos of all (or most) of those people who were at the Capitol that day, but investigators need to connect names to those faces. The FBI also has cellphone records from the U.S Capitol celltower which captured IDs for everyone who carried and used a phone that day. But they need to match up the cellphone IDs with the images - and that's where citizens have been helping.
Any of us can look at those still photos or videos and perhaps see someone we know. People are still sending info to the FBI tip line and webpages even now. Stuff gets stupidly posted on Facebook too, as we have seen. The tips the feds get are sometimes good, but they could just as likely be incorrect or incomplete. The investigators still need to thoroughly vet every tip, and then follow up with questioning suspects and their companions. Hundreds of manhours go into each suspect and arrest!

(3,502 posts)I guess the point that the Republican "establishment" is doing everything in their power to protect the perpetrator of "the Big Lie" that whipped the lesser folks into a frenzy, while not only ignoring them but claiming the bulk of them are not Trump supporters. There's probably a better way to say this.
It just amazes me that so many folks are willing to basically sacrifice their lives for a person (and party) that doesn't give 2 pisses about them beyond using them to exert their power.
