It is up to the Republicans. They can choose their poison.
They can have a fair and bi-partisan Commission, with equal numbers of Democrats and Republicans, to investigate the attack upon our Capitol...
Or they can have a Select Committee with a majority of Democrats calling witnesses just before the election next year?
If they were wise, they would choose a fair and balanced Commission over a Select Committee.
But they are not wise. They are scared. They are cowards. They are afraid of the truth.
But they get to make a decision. Chuck Schumer will bring it before the Senate, probably next week?
America is watching.
Nancy is giving them a chance to do the right thing. If they fail, she will move ahead without them.

(21,427 posts)..and Schumer needs to enforce the filibuster. Make Republicans stand on the floor of the Senate and explain why we shouldn't investigate an attack on our democracy.

(2,984 posts)The Dem controlled majority committee WILL be fair and balanced. The other way would be a stonewall. But I get it, that should be the messaging for sure and of course, Nancy is outmaneuvering them brilliantly, again, as usual.

I've read that members of congress typically don't know most of the rules, much less have the ability to use them strategically in these very complex, ongoing, constantly changing situations. Very different skills set from those needed to craft agricultural legislation.

(18,486 posts)But they do criminal investigations for the purpose of bringing charges. Investigations by Congress or a commission have a different purpose.

(8,935 posts)Congress gets an unredacted copy of the final report. Make it a law if we have to.
Dis-Barr taking the only copy of the final report and issuing a 4 page summary (written before the report was complete), broke all kinds of norms that occur in DC.
If the report comes out after the midterms, and heaven forbid the (R)'s take control of the House, they'll bury the report, without thinking twice.

(4,878 posts)The GOP will call ANY investigation partisan.
A DOJ investigation may take a long time, and will be secret until completed
The backlog of uninvestigated criminal activity is likely overwhelming them. Not sure about adding another.
The focus of a commission isnt identical to a criminal investigation. The GOP is right that there is a partisan element involved, and they know they are that element. Frankly i think the DOJ might not get to the heart of the driving forces.

StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)She had a win win situation. If they agreed to the commission, that would have been great. But if they don't she's got another plan that will also work to the country's and Democrats' advantage.
I don't know why people here assume that if Pelosi isn't telegraphing her strategy in real time, she doesn't have one.

(21,427 posts)when it comes to doling out justice to the criminals. The thing is, the MSM is not liberal, if Speaker Pelosi had done what Republicans did for Benghazi, the MSM would have crucified Democrats for doing partisan politics.
Democrats have the added benefit now of a bipartisan vote in the House, 35 Republicans is a bigger deal than it appears.

(19,143 posts)Dems can hold hearings without Republican approval. They can call witnesses, but can they have subpoena power?.
I was thinking this was all just a show for bipartisanship, but that the Dems control everything and they can hold just as many hearings on this as the Reps did on Benghazi.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)Fortunately, unlike during the impeachment and oversight investigations, there's a Justice Department that will actually enforce the subpoenas issues by Congress.

(7,434 posts)Push the GOP into their wheelhouse: whatever Trump says.
Let them do it quickly so they can't think strategically. They haven't done so in over five years, why stop now?
Trump is a crazed dunderhead. Let the GOP follow him in every conceivable way. Then when Trumpy-Boy gets indicted and convicted, the GOP can follow him to his prison cell for more words of wisdom.
Giving the GOP until next week allows them a few days to re-group and consider their medium and long-term well-being. Don't let them, Chuck. Drive it home before Saturday.

America deserves an investigation and the truth and only one party will give them the truth. That's the unfortunate state of politics in our country right now. It's a dangerous time that an authoritarian movement is pushing with every lie they've got to take over our government.

(758 posts)They planned it and co-ordinated it. We want to know the players. The congresspeople involved.
The mapped it out, knew WHEN to strike, where to go, had a guy with zip ties ready to lead out the
congresspeople to the gallows (for fear factor, or for real?). Some had guns in the capitol. They had other guns
stashed nearby. Bombs.
What more had been learned from the arrests and interrogations what we don't know. It will all come out. Obviously they are
afraid of their own culpability and the whole world can see through the mealy mouths.
They think this will be a bad "look" for the 2022 elections? Yeah, I hope so. If Americans don't think it's bad to stage a coup to overturn the election by force, and then by charade, we need to help them understand.
A lot of civic education needs doing.

(61,700 posts)A fair and bipartisan investigation will have results that make the GQP look bad. A select committee investigation, when it arrives at the same conclusion, will be described as a Democrat hatchett job, but at least the truth will be out there.

(3,433 posts)The investigation will by fair either way because Dems believe in democracy, fairness, good government and the rule of law.
By forcing it to be a select committee the GOP scores a HUGE political win because it will be called a witch hunt. That's easier to do when politicians are running the investigation.
No matter how fair or balanced it might be, the Repubs will portray it as nothing but politics and a witch hunt. That is why a Commission would be preferable. Sorry if I miscommunicated that.
