House Republicans tried to scrap the requirement for vaccinated members to wear masks in the House chamber and in committee meeting spaces, as lawmakers continue to spar over implementation of coronavirus safety protocols.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi explained that mask mandates would not be relaxed until all members are vaccinated.
"We have to wait for them to be vaccinated because they are selfishly an endangerment to other people include staff people here," Pelosi said, adding that relying on the "honor system" wouldn't be enough at this point to lift the mandate.
"Do you want them breathing in your face on the strength of their honor?" Pelosi said. "We have a responsibility to make sure of that the House of Representatives chamber is not a petri dish because of the selfishness of some not to be vaccinated."

(38,643 posts)Any suggestion that masking should be enforced for the protection of others inherently means you (or in this case Pelosi) are anti-science and believe the vaccination doesn't work.
Guess I'll just wait for the surge and say, "I told you so." I hope the summer weather saves us, but I'm expecting a surge once it starts getting colder unless there is a dramatic jump in vaccinations. I just hope the variants these yahoos are creating aren't different enough that they can get through the vaccine barrier.

In the scenario being discussed here, the only "endangerment to other people include staff people here" would be to others who are also unvaccinated.
And Pelosi's current rule requires those who are vaccinated to continue wearing masks. As noted elsewhere on the thread... the vast majority of members/staff have been vaccinated. They just aren't all willing to say so when surveyed.

(26,357 posts)I'm with Pelosi - she said she's not going to lift the mask rule in the House until the GQP members get their damned shots & the House Physician says it's safe.
The vaccine is safe and effective, and for healthy people like me, it brings my risk almost to zero. The problem is that the GQP won't get their vaccines because of their juvenile Tucker & Karen tantrums, so they're going to keep being plague rats. I wouldn't intervene if all they were doing was subjecting themselves to natural selection.
But there are too many people out there - members of Congress, staff, etc. who are immunocompromised or have other medical conditions, and they're all at risk because of these Republican brainstems. They didn't sign up for their bullshit.
Until the House Physician says it's safe to lift the mask rules, I'm fine with Pelosi torturing them, one $5,000 fine at a time.

(26,357 posts)I have both shots, as do my immediate family members in the house, so I feel a lot better about being out & about.
I'll still have my mask with me, and I used it at the grocery store, just to be safe, but at the same time, I'm eating out & stopping at watering holes more often.

(82,849 posts)I will continue to mask up indoors so that I don't infect others who might be vulnerable. I might be a carrier even though I have vaccine immunity, and others around me may not be vaccinated for any number of reasons, good and bad. So by whining about not wearing masks, Republicans are exposing every person in their caucus who hasn't been vaccinated to Covid-19. Why unvaccinated Republicans aren't telling their colleagues to cheese it about masks is not apparent to me.
