The first Americans to be vaccinated against the coronavirus could require a third "booster" shot as early as September, the CEOs of Pfizer and Moderna told Axios.
Driving the news: "The data that I see coming, they are supporting the notion that likely there will be a need for a booster somewhere between eight and 12 months," Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said yesterday during an Axios event.
That means some Americans could need a booster as soon as September or October, he added.
State of play: Only time will tell how long protection from the first two vaccine doses will last, but there's no evidence yet that it's fading. Even if protection does begin to fade which is common among vaccines it won't happen overnight.

(77 posts)They are constantly looking at the data. Was it a little too soon for these vaccines to be administered? I guess that is why they are not approved by the FDA. Professor and virologist John Moore said we have to look at whether there is a corporate agenda behind this. Ya think? Sounds like they are not sure about anything.
Looking at the data through clinical trials and real-world evidence. Shouldn't this have been studied prior before distributing? These vaccines were rushed.

(415 posts)And no doubt there are several agendas, corporate and otherwise. It's likely they wouldn't share all the info, even if they knew.
I don't have a problem with the rush. It was a dire emergency with catastrophic potential. It's tough to delay when tens of thousands of people are dying every day. I believe once they knew they were safe and effective, at least to a point, they released them and gambled they can figure out the longer term problems with more time.

(9,696 posts)"how long" has been the only question.
And whats the story for J&J? Can you mix and match foe even more protection?

So I was expecting this.
Those of us who got shots in Feb or March are looking at late fall.
Since all the distribution flaws from the incompetence of Warp Speed managers have been cleaned up, they should be entering the streamlining phase.
By fall, getting the booster should be walk in, get shot, leave.

(77,106 posts)I believe it was after being fully vaccinated. I definitely don't recall anything said about first vaccination.
But, that might have been an inference I missed.
I'm going with after the second, unless I see otherwise. We're only talking 21-28 days difference, and they're saying 8-12 months.
Seems doubtful the window is that narrow, given what they're saying. So, we have wiggle room.
