Note - YOU SHOULD NEVER GET OUT OF YOUR CAR AND APPROACH BISON! On May 13, 2021 a baby bison stopped and layed down on the road while the other cows surrounded it from oncoming cars. One gentleman risked injury getting out of his truck and walked toward the cows. Thankfully he didn't get charged by a bison.

I wasn't exactly sure what they were, don't think I've ever seen one before in real life.

I ask if it's alright to approach a stranger's dog... And I do think that I saw bison before, just once years ago when I was driving south to North Carolina with my grandmother when I spotted some looking over a fence when we drove through West Virginia. I really would have liked to have stopped for a minute to get a closer look, but my grandmother was always in a big hurry, she only liked to stop for one night on the drive from Northeastern New York to Western North Carolina...

9. Here's a 'just born' baby bison at the Bronx Zoo in NYC in mid-2019..

There are also two slightly older calves in the herd. The new one appears at around 3:00 in the video.

I have been charged and stampeded and it was not a fun thing. I worked in the park both times, they hate people in NPS uniforms and their vehicles. I have some stories... I know that exact spot on the road too.

These are sentient beings, they not only protect their babies, they will protect and help an injured member of their group, even when running from a threat. Bulls will stand in the middle of the road to stop traffic when a group is trying to cross the road and he won't move until everyone is across. They will acknowledge humans who are not a threat.

Bison are huge, really fast, and strong. A Bison could be on top of that idiot in under 5 seconds.

15. I can attest to that...

Lived in the area for years and have been in some intense encounters but most encounters were peaceful. You have to know how to communicate with them, they are very intelligent.

20. A few years ago I was out on the open prairie of the Niobrara Wildlife Refuge

And on their home turf 100 yds was more than close enough for me to see a bison.

But I turned my back for a second and suddenly I didn't have a good feeling, turned around to see that sucker charging toward me full scream ahead, I barely made it into the building nearby before he was right there. 100 yards, less than ten seconds.

... in a grove of cottonwood trees. I was less then 10 yards to the closest one. I walked backwards until they were out of sight and then ran till I had a fence between me and the bison.

With a calf in the heard the guy us lucky he didn't get stomped.

It is mine. We spent a few days there sightseeing & hiking around, so much to see. We were there in a Sept. many yrs ago, so it was somewhat past the tourist season.

That goes for any wild animal in Yellowstone. The park is their home not yours.

30. I was the lead car in one of those. The bison thought he owned the double-yellow line on the road.

The road was probably easier walking than the deep snow on the fields. Anyway, the bison slowly walked by my car, his head about two feet from my head. Then, the guy behind me decided he'd waited long enough and laid on his horn. I just hoped the bison would ignore that idiot and not headbutt my door. Once the bison was behind me, I hit the gas. I hope the bison jumped on the idiot's car.

Yellowstone when it's 25 degrees and covered with snow, every two-bit vent is visible along the road, blowing steam into the air. Fascinating.
