Hello, Underground dwellers!
Are y'all ready for the green America of tomorrow?

As a long-time cultivator of medical marijuana in the fair state of California, I naturally support pro-cannabis legislation.
[/IMG]
But how do you folks feel about the legalization measures in Colorado, Washington and Oregon?

Are you for it? Against it? Why?

(37,051 posts)...and those are some fine buds you've got there. I'm in norcal too. I'm really surprised a legalization initiative didn't make it onto the ballot in CA this year. I think it would have been an exceptional year to do it, what with the presidential election and all. I'm looking forward to Colorado and Washington becoming the first states to fully challenge the federal prohibition. Wish it was us.

Voice for Peace
(13,141 posts)I know it sounds ridiculous.. but I often suspect that the
length of life is predetermined. That there is a set
appointment for death. We don't get to know when it is, but
it's there. We come with an expiry date, and that's when
we expire.
There are so many cases of healthy people dying,
sick people living forever, long after they have stopped enjoying,
and people who survive impossible odds,
babies who arrive and depart like a little wave that splashes on the beach,
and so on.
No question that health determines, or at least affects, quality of life, while we're here.
porphyrian
(18,530 posts)I believe that there may be something to fatalism with regards to the fact that, in the future, there will have been a single path through space-time each of us will have traveled to our end. While we live, that end is likely still true; we will reach it through the choices we make along the way.
What I do know is that depression, anger, stress and other "negative" emotions mirror themselves in our physical health and can kill us (heart attacks, for example). There is some evidence that these can even cause cancer. There is also some evidence that happiness and laughter can boost our immune systems and, if not cure disease, prevent the negative mental states that make things worse. I don't believe happiness alone extends life any more than I believe jogging does, especially if you get killed in a car wreck, say. But, it can prevent the depression that may have caused you heart disease that would have killed you sooner, barring any other factors.
Or, I'm just full of shit.
Voice for Peace
(13,141 posts)full of shit, I mean.
but many people are. it never occurs to them,
that's how you can tell.
I started looking for exceptions to all the rules
about life and death and what keeps us alive,
and found so many exceptions, enough to satisfy me
that I could quit worrying and start enjoying more.
Deal with it when it arrives.
You're right that there are so many factors. Health is
one, genetics I suppose.. but then there are the sids
babies. Who knows, not me.

The DUI thing is very bad too, medical patients better forget about driving for a few days after medicating.
502 is crafted by LEO's to get in front of this, since the smartest of them know fighting it is a lost cause.
http://www.theolympian.com/2012/10/07/2278108/should-pot-be-legal-no-voters.html
Should pot be legal? NO: Voters should hold out for real reform, not fall for this narrow proposal
Douglas Hiatt is a Seattle-based criminal defense attorney and a co-founder of Sensible Washington, which opposes Initiative 502 and advocates for legalization of hemp and cannabis
"Washington voters are being told a big lie. New Approach Washington, the campaign behind Initiative 502, is advertising that it will legalize marijuana. It would not.
It creates a very narrow exception that defines the possession of one ounce by adults over 21, and the states rules for production, as not a violation of the law.
I-502 leaves every single law now making marijuana illegal on the books. Walk out of the state-sanctioned, licensed and taxed store and hand the marijuana to your significant other and it is a delivery of marijuana. This is not comprehensive, real reform.
What I-502 does change is our DUI law. Our current DUI laws are working just fine and result in conviction rates of over 90 percent. This initiative sets unneeded, unasked for and unscientific levels for impairment for adults (5 nanograms, rejected three times by the Colorado Legislature), while establishing a zero-tolerance provision for all drivers 16 to 21.
It also takes away your ability to defend yourself. If you meet the levels, you are guilty. No explaining that you are a patient, no arguing about the levels or tolerance, nothing. For drivers age 16 to 21, any detectable amount of marijuana will result in a DUI conviction and disastrous effects on their parents insurance...(MORE)

"...No on I-502 is the primary group opposing Initiative 502. Their website denounces what they describe as I-502's "new approach to prohibition", and describes how the DUID provisions of I-502 may actually increase the potential penalty for marijuana use, and lead to a new era in the war on drugs under color of DUID prosecutions, as part of what they describe as a nationwide strategy to move war on drugs from the current focus on sales and possession to a new and more ominous offensive on drivers via new per se DUID laws like I-502. NoOn502 Website http://www.nooni502.com/wordpress/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Initiative_502
"...The initiative would legalize use of marijuana products purchased from state authorized sources for adults 21 and over... Unlicensed cannabis will still be illegal, including personal "grows" in one's own home, except for medical cannabis as regulated under RCW 69.51A.
"...Part I identifies the goal of the initiative and authorizes the Washington State Liquor Control Board "to regulate and tax marijuana for persons twenty-one years of age and older, and add a new threshold for driving under the influence of marijuana."
"...Part III establishes a license system for marijuana producers, processors and retailers. Initial licenses shall be $250 with an annual renewal fee of $1000.
"...Part V on "driving under the influence of marijuana" sets a per se DUI limit of active blood THC levels at greater than or equal to 5 nanograms per milliliter. Some medical cannabis advocates are concerned that this will lead to DUI convictions for medicinal cannabis users, who are driving with blood THC levels greater than or equal to 5 nanograms per milliliter.[12] If a suspect's blood tests for more than 5 nanograms/ml, under I-502 they would be guilty of DUI by definition, as opposed to the current law, RCW 46.61.502(1)(a) which requires proof of "impairment" for a conviction.
****
Legalization? Nope. It's a LEO Trojan horse.
porphyrian
(18,530 posts)Getting laws right often requires multiple takes over a period of years. I agree that this DUI provision is horrible, especially given that there is already an existing proof of impairment provision, but it may take the failure of this and the attendant outrage (or the proper Senator's DUI) to have it fixed. I'm not familiar with Washington law, but some Governors conduct line item vetos. Besides, isn't the ultimate goal to change the federal law, which may render state laws moot anyway? This can still work out.

(9,853 posts)Cannabis can be cheaper and more discerning for recreational and medical uses than alcohol, tobacco, and many common prescription drugs.
Defining "responsible use" is a problem of policy.
Employment tests for cannabis should only be mandated by profession, incident, and history of the employee.
"Responsible use" includes driving, and childcare and other concerns as well as a nuanced approach to employment.
Legalization is best broad: faux-ecology in the home, family garden, farmer's market, or pharmaceutical.
Cannabis is convergent to the evolution of human culture and physiology.
Hippie Jesus probably smoked pot (and some say took mushrooms too).
Ethnogens are another topic that IMHO are part of human evolution and history

(15 posts)Very much for it. I also have many righty friends who are also for it. It really is a bipartisan issue. Its the religious right and the pharma companies that's so against it.
One area that Obama has been a complete failure on is marijuana/drug war. Complete and total disaster in that respect.
Legalize it, tax the shit out of it, and money will flow. I don't think that revenue stream would last forever in the sense that I think usage would level off after the initial "OMG ITS LEGAL" craze died down like it did in Holland.

We should return to hemp products for many, many reasons. The biggest one is the medicinal and NUTRITIONAL benefits of what comes from that bud.
We could have solar, wind, geothermal, greenhousing farms in winter, permaculture landscape for summer and storm-water management.
We could have grow houses for hemp, and all the byproducts, including fabric and rope, other construction materials from this plant.
We could cultivate renewable sources of energy, and when appropriate, cop a buzz after a hard day's work. ETOH related violence (DUI, hit and runs, domestic violence) would be down, and major orgasms could be on the rise.
