(23,336 posts)... I'm thinking a goodly gulp of hemlock tea will send this pestilence to Hades.
Here's to my health!

Socrates was sentenced to death for "poisoning the minds of the youth," and he drank hemlock to carry out the sentence.

(10,167 posts)Socrates was sentenced to death for atheism (which was false), for corrupting the youth (he told them to question authority, even the gods), and with sophistry (false).
He was offered his freedom if he would leave Athens and/or stop philosophizing and he basically told the oligarchs to pound sand. He was the spiritual leader of the Democrats, and a danger to the power structure of the money grubbing Oligarchs so they got rid of him.
They weren't very successful since he's talked about and taught in every intro to Western Philosophy class in the world.

(32,617 posts)Thanks!
As I understand it, it was partially political because Athens was undergoing a regime change at the time. Socrates was never a political leader (as we would call it) but he seemed to support the ones going out, not the ones coming in.
